First Lady Michelle Obama told the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Legislative Conference on Wednesday that her Lets Move! campaign to end childhood obesity requires grassroots efforts in communities across the nation, such as planting community gardens and making fresh produce more readily available, including in liquor stores.
Obama cited a group in Detroit as a wonderful example of how local communities can make the campaign succeed.

They drive a truck through the city, selling fresh, affordable produce, Obama said. And theyve set up a small market. Theyve planted a community garden. Theyve even convinced some of the local liquor stores to stock more fruits and vegetables.

Obama likened the fight against childhood obesity to the civil rights movement and the role black Americans have played in bettering their lives.

Damn, I'm old. I remember in the 50's when Goebel was the pride of Tiger baseball.
They could still show people drinking on TV then, so we loved turning on the game in about the 7th inning to see the 2 announcers toasting the fans and trying not to slur their words .......................... FRegards
Thanks for the ping!
Darn....I remember the ragman, too.
So, I officially qualify for carbon dating - no birth certificate necessary.
And these grants, made possible through the health care reform law, will go to 11 communities and states across the country, Obama said. They will help support innovative programs designed to fight childhood obesity and make our communities healthier.
That's racist. What about thin white kids who don't get vegetables?
Maybe she should sweep around her own door before she starts lecturing the rest of us!
LOL! They are priceless, smokingfrog!
We must not forget liquor is made from grain. Support the farmer. Buy more liquor. BTW which Bourbon is the healthiest?
The only healthy foods I need at the liquor store are celery for my Bloody Mary, limes for my Corona and margaritas, and olives and onions for my martinis...
Since we are all health care bureaucrats now, I want to know whether the guy driving the vegetable truck in Detroit has a license and pays taxes on the income derived from this venture.
Michigan ping! Make them eat vegetables with their cake and fudge!
“Theyve even convinced some of the local liquor stores to stock more fruits and vegetables.”
This is satire, right?
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
We call them STEALTH REPARATIONS.
You beat me to it. I need limes for my gin and tonic, and they have to be nice fresh ones, not the ones they have at the bar that are turning brown. Yuck.
They may be all cash deals but a lot of them are smart enough to show enough income to receive the maximum EARNED INCOME CREDIT (aka negative income tax).
That’s why you see so many storefront tax preparers in the ‘hood between New Years and April 15.
not enough fruit in my liquor , I guess.
I’ll have a double cheesburger,large fries,5th of Jack,and a DIET Coke.
oh yeah, and an apple.
What about Four Fried Chickens and a Coke?
Hahaha, using Detroit as a benchmark. LOL Fail!
We would haul them around the neighborhood in a wagon and sell them for 25 cents for a large bunch. We also sold oranges and grapefruit the same way, and got those free.
There was an orange packing house near by that gave us any that fell off the conveyor because the bag string ripped. It got to where the guys working at the plant would just take out their pocketknife and clip the strings on enough bags to fill our wagons when they saw us coming. I think the boss told them to do it, because we saw him watching while they did it. Those were much different times.
