Cornyn: GOP's stance on social issues alienating independents [shut up John]

Cornyn: GOP's stance on social issues alienating independents

A striking admission from NRSC chair John Cornyn, buried in today's New York Times article about the GOP and the Tea party:

Mr. Cornyn, who has been on the receiving end of anti-establishment anger, argued that the Tea Party had helped Republicans in one important respect, by moving the debate away from social issues. While Tea Party supporters tend to be socially conservative on issues like same-sex marriage and abortion, most say they don't want to talk about them; they believe that by spending so much time on those issues, the Republican Party failed to focus on fiscal conservatism.

While social issues tend to be polarizing, Republicans can win on economic issues, Mr. Cornyn said, because the Democrats have been in charge as the economy has gone south.

"As I've traveled," he said, "I've talked to a lot of folks who are basically independents who say: I'm fine with the Republicans as long as we're talking about fiscal responsibility. Where I go off the reservation is when you talk about social issues."

That seems to be a clear admission from Cornyn that the focus on social issues demanded by social conservatives is driving "a lot" of independents "off the reservation." Very candid.

The purpose of John Cornyn is to make the late John Tower look good by comparison. Like Tower, the longer Cornyn remains in Washington, the more disgusting he becomes.

What your seeing isn’t the media template, it’s the religion of the ruling class and the people who inhabit boards of director/governors etc (the big money people in the GOP).

They believe in abortion, homo marriage, etc and their ability to advance that agenda without the country bumpkins finding out (GW was a master at this).

The Republican coalition of country clubbers and social conservatives was always doomed to split. The truism is that a party leadership is an extreme version of it’s rank and file. Well obviously that’s true for the GOP only if you look at the values of country clubbers. I’d say it looks like realigning election time now.

What's happened to Cornyn? He used to be a pretty solid conservative, but lately he sounds more like a McCain/Grahmnesty RINO. Must be too much time in Washington, maybe next time hes up for reelection its time to give him a “vacation”.

Greg Sargent from the WaCompost - again - doing all he can to help his life partners, the Democrats.

Honestly, every article Sargent writes is specifically and methodically devised to aid and assist Democrats and injure Republicans.

Hey Cornyn, every time you open your mouth you sound like a blithering Christine Whitmanesque loser. What? Are you trying out for the MSNBC host job when you retire?

What does “basically Independent” mean? Either you are or are not an Independent.

Even in California over half the population are AGAINST same sex marriage, so to claim the Conservative position on this is turning anywhere near a majority of people off is nonsense.

And Cornyn says he spoke to “a lot of folks”, what the hell constitutes “a lot of folks”? Is it 10? How about 25? How many?

What we have here is yet another desperate attempt of the dying Lib media to show dissension in the Rep ranks.

To the extent there is any dissension it is having a positive effect on the Party as it is jarring the leaders into becoming conscious of who is REALLY in charge of the Party (hint, it ain’t them)

I have never quite understood the trade “independents” are willing to make. They would rather have high taxes, oppressive regulation, and big government than risk the possibility of some government restrictions on killing human embryos. This does not sound logical to me.

social issues alienating independents

Except those independents who call themselves that because the GOP won't come out forthrightly on social issues.

And I'm not sure what's not to like about an issue with 70 percent backing among all Americans, never mind the GOP, such as normal marriage. Pro-life is a majority builder among voters the GOP can bring in, too. Don't forget the voters the Dems steal by pretending to be social conservatives. Remember phonies like Bob Casey and Jim Webb.

Does Cornyn want the GOP to get outflanked to the right again? Remember 2006: Nancy Pelosi and Hilary hid, and the Democratic 527s and candidates were talking about "values" and practically singing psalms. People forget, especially squishes, that nobody voted for liberalism, fiscal or social, in 2006.

I expect the resignations of John Cornyn and Michael Steele to be on my desk on November 3rd. Win, lose or draw!

Cornyn isnt up for reelection here in Texas till 2014 so he thinks he is safe.

I for one plan on actively campaigning and working against him if he seeks reelection then.

Signed,

Life-long Republican

Without belief in God there are no inalienable rights.
Rights are then determined by the governing powers.
If you believe in God there are social issues that have to be dealt with according to his will.

So leaving off the social issues will eventually push you to government control.

The GOP is focusing on economic issues. But that doesn’t mean it’s correct to say Independents don’t care about social issues. The media template right now is the Tea Party only cares about economic issues. I think that’s bunk and Cornyn is an idiot.

This does not sound logical to me.

That is because you lack both basic morality, and you approach all things from a perspective that takes atheism as a given.

There is no other way to get where you are. If you were even agnostic then that entails the possibility that your actions today can have consequences that extend beyond your death.

You are up against a fundamentally insurmountable wall between worldviews.

Hogwash.. Every time the social issues are placed before the voters anywhere (even in the deep blue uber liberal peoples socialist utopian republic of california) the people say no to perversion and abortion.. that's why it takes judicial activism and degenerate liberal clowns like John Cornyn to foist this BS on the people.

To hell with the RINOs.. Vote em’ all out! ASAP
