Child Still Expelled for Toy Gun (2 years, already out of school 1 year !)

Parents want their child back in school. School board says no way

Print Share Buzz up!62retweetTOP1K5diggsdigg Samuel Burgos has fond memories of his friends at school, but he only gets to see them in pictures now.

The 8-year-old boy hasn't been in school for a year and will likely miss another year if the Broward County School Board has its way.

Burgos was suspended from school in November after a teacher found a toy gun in his backpack. But when the boy went to register to go back to Pembroke Pines Charter School, he was told he will be expelled for this school year, too, as part of the county's zero tolerance weapons policy.

"He made a mistake, but why the severe punishment? I don't understand that," said Magdiel Burgos, Sam's dad.

Yeah...I had an Outdoor Citizenship class in the late 70’s.
Air rifles in the cafeteria. Horror of horrors.

I shot rifles in school, because that’s where the range was!

I had to try to explain to my son why he couldn’t wear his big belt buckle with a sillouette of an old time six gun on it to school. A ten year old couldn’t even understand the logic.

Sick and sad.

I pray that we’ll soon have a full restoration of complete 2nd Amendment rights. I would love to see a re-emergence of extracurricular shooting clubs.

School board officials said the rules are quite clear and that the toy gun constituted a weapon.

Fools in charge.

We used to play Cowboys N Indians and Cops N Robbers in the school playground during recess and lunch...

When I was in grade school, virtually all boys carried (real) knives in their pocket. When we were bored we would play mumbley-peg on the playgrounds. No one ever was stabbed or, as I recall, even cut.

We also had a smoking court and as seniors were allowed to go out for lunch.

Sounds like my high school after they started to crack down. Before, the kids generally smoked everywhere, and it was an open campus for everyone. Graduated in '79.

Private schools have “no tolerance” too! My now 19-year-old was expelled from my parish school for having a knife. He was being bullied and decided to protect himself - showed it to some friends... who told the teacher. “No tolerance” had him in a new school the next week. We all lived thru it and I believe that he is better off for the change anyway.

Law suit...Federal courts.Step #1...request an emergency order allowing the kid to go to *any* private school in the state at the School Dept’s expense....step #2...sue the School Dept for serious $$$.

We bought our son a small swiss army knife when he was seven and that kid thought he had gone to heaven. He will cherish it forever. He was homeschooled and I still told him not to take it out of his pocket in public. You never know where a libtard will be.

That was my first memorable experience with liberalism as the teacher pretty much perp-walked me to the Principal’s office.

Afterward, my mother had to explain to me that some people were afraid of those of us with the knowledge and skills to fend for ourselves. That lesson will never be lost on me.

The age in this case and the fact that we're talking about a *toy* gun are both vitally important. It sounds like your son's case might have been *quite* different....although it's clearly not good that he was being bullied.

Amazing how far we have sunk in such a short time. When I was in High School in the late 1970’s it was not unusual to see a pickup in the student parking lot with a hunting rifle in a gun rack. The school even and a shooting club with skeet and target competition.
Now, it was no Polyanna situation - we did have fist fights and the usual punks you avoided in the halls, but we were never worried about someone bringing a gun to school to commit a violent act, nor were we worried about having our pockets emptied to see if we had a plastic toy gun.

I’ve got a nick scar on my right index finger, from playing mumbley-peg with my knife in the school cafeteria during lunch. School nurse gave me a band-aid and said “well that should teach you not to be stupid”. Taught me to pay more attention while playing mumbley-peg is what it did.

Public school is child abuse.”

They are “government” schools. There is nothing relevantly “public” about them, except that they feast on tax dollars.

No one should be able to call himself a conservative if he is offering up his children as living sacrifices to the Moloch of government schools.

I can’t understand why these parents want their child back in that school.

Problem solved, it's tough but you can pick the worthwhile schools with research. Not all parents can home school, but it's the best option for a child.

Public school is a serious crime, and bootlicker private schools are nearly as bad.

Well...in spite of Oregon's rep, there's an independent streak left in a lot of us. We'll tell anybody where to get off. The hill folks are slow to anger, but they're mean when angry. Lots of Arkansas transplants.
