Parents want their child back in school. School board says no way

Print Share Buzz up!62retweetTOP1K5diggsdigg Samuel Burgos has fond memories of his friends at school, but he only gets to see them in pictures now.

The 8-year-old boy hasn't been in school for a year and will likely miss another year if the Broward County School Board has its way.

Burgos was suspended from school in November after a teacher found a toy gun in his backpack. But when the boy went to register to go back to Pembroke Pines Charter School, he was told he will be expelled for this school year, too, as part of the county's zero tolerance weapons policy.

"He made a mistake, but why the severe punishment? I don't understand that," said Magdiel Burgos, Sam's dad.

This zero tolerance crap REALLY fries me!

When I was in middle school (late 80s), I got “caught” with a Swiss army knife in my bookbag. It was my Boy Scout knife, and I usually always had it with me. Some little kid reported me to a teacher, but when I was dragged into the AP’s office, he called my mother, told her that she had to come pick it up and that it wasn’t appropriate to have at school and sent me on my way.

I DREAD to think what my young life would’ve been like if I was born 10 years later.

OMG!!! A concealed toy gun. Get used to home-schooling, kid.

Yeah, whatever.

I wish they had that when I was in school.

Lucky bastard.

And there are idiots out there that seriously ask “Why are home schools becoming so popular?”

Public school is child abuse.

The boy should be in private school and the parents should sue the district into bankruptcy.

the district obviously prefers to school this child at home or pay for his private school

at least an attorney would see that they did

This sort of stupidity is precisely why none of my kids have ever darkened the the doors of a public school.

Lawsuit anyone? I usually detest parents sueing schools, but in this case I am all for it. Do the parents get a refund from their Fed, State, and property taxes for not being able to access the public amenities they pay for? Couldn’t they say the kid is muslum and its a religious thing? I am sure Mayor Blumbug would bite on that one.

Things have REALLY changed since my time! During the early 1980's in rural WV I remember boys would often come to High School during hunting season wearing Camo and with guns in their trucks. I distinctly remember one incident where two boys were standing in front of the school and one had a rifle, the Asst. Principal walked up and asked them what they were doing. They responded that Boy 1 was showing Boy 2 a rifle that he was thinking about selling. The Principal just rolled his eyes and told them that this was a school not the local Swap and Shop and to put the gun in their truck and conclude their business after school.

Could you imagine if that happened today! It would be a national news story...

When I was in school you could take a shotgun on the bus to school, store it in your school locker, and hunt after school on school property!

Sue the school district. The law says a child MUST attend school until the age of 16. If they don't, the parents are charged with truancy.

If this mother simply decided to keep her child home and do nothing for 2 years, she'd be charged with child abuse.

Snitches get stitches.

Yeah, that's the idea we want to instill in our kids... [/sarcasm]

I guess you like having thugs and gang-bangers running around.

The problem is with the way the policy is implemented, and that problem isn't solved by "snitches get stitches."

“I DREAD to think what my young life would’ve been like if I was born 10 years later.”

Dude, in my high school half the pickups and cars had shotguns in them since the farm boys would go hunting early in the morning. We also had a smoking court and as seniors were allowed to go out for lunch. BTW, we never had to have teachers teach us on how to use a condom. Times, they do change.

Back in the day we had knives in our boots, Skoal in our back pockets, and shot guns in our unlocked pick ups in the school parking lot. Amazing how no one thought a thing about it but today kids can get a record for having a toy gun or a plastic butter knife or their t-shirt offends someone.
