Leadership lessons from 'the best place to work in federal government'

Gregory B. Jaczko is the chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Prior to his tenure at NRC, Jaczko served as appropriations director as well as the science policy adviser for Sen. Harry Reid. For the third consecutive time, the NRC ranked first in the Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings, released this month.

How do you continue to keep your employees engaged in NRC's mission and work?

We listen to our employees. I think what is really incumbent upon me and the other senior managers is to make sure we listen to figure out, "What do you need in order to best carry out our mission?" Communication is one of the biggest keys to being successful in this kind of position. You have to communicate not only what your direction is but then also hear from your employees about how they would solve the problems that are coming up. It's never easy to be sure that you're encouraging dissenting views to come forward, but we strive to create an environment where people feel comfortable raising a different view than what may be the mainstream....

What did you learn about leadership working on the Hill, and how have you applied this knowledge at NRC?

One of the things I learned in working for Senator Reid was the importance of building consensus and, more importantly, working across the aisle. The most successful people on the Hill were people who were able to do that, and it was certainly a lesson I took with me to the Commission. ...You may not always agree on solutions, but it's important to have that dialogue and respect the people who disagree with you and learn how to build those collaborations.

On so many issues that we face as a nation, there are different viewpoints, and it's important to hear other people's views and what their thoughts are on issues. This is the best federal employee we have by some bizzaro world standard. He thinks Sen Reid is a consensu builder? And this mope draws a paycheck for being this stoopid.

Simple jobs, high pay, excellent benefits, almost no chance of losing your job, what’s not to like?

We have successfully over regulated the industry such that no Nukes have been built for decades so we can continue to pollute the Earth’s surface environment with Hg from dirty coal.

Federal Employees (With the exception of some in the military) make the worst leaders. I found the best ones came from smaller school;s and learned the rope from books and real life...Something a lifetime bureaucrat never experiences. They just follow a road-map, back-stab and keep their nose clean...aka don't get caught.

I learned my skills from a small collage and real life...Something this Jackass has never experience. Also, learning consensus from a politician is called a Lie!

PS...I've dealt with the NRC...They can teach Jesse Jackson how to hustle....

Haven’t hey received their new mission statement yet?
Wait until they get the new presidential directive to refocus their efforts.

Their new responsibility will be to reach out to muslims, share nuclear technology and expertise with them, and assist them in making it clear to the world how it is really followers of Islam who first cracked the atom, and, thanks to muslim scientific contributions, it is now possible for everyone to have cheap and abundant nuclear power.

No wonder this agency has won the prize for being the #1 federal government obstacle to progress several times running.

As a reasonably new federal employee (3 years) I totally concur. I spend 20 years owning two businesses, another 6 teaching and consulting then went to work for the government since I finally got around to having a family. A job came up and I was recommended for it and thought why not, the pay was right and I would not have to dip into my investments in order to have regular 8-5 type work so I would be home for the kiddos.

There are days I see things that make me pull my hair out and I have even left the building for a couple of hours to cool off...

Then I remind myself that the “people” elect the folks who make the rules (can't fire, spend whatever, work my butt off to make up for 10 who don't, travel regulations yada yada yada...) so they get what they expect and I should expect same until something changes and I get back at it.

Hang tough and don't let the bast@*ds get you down. You can outlast them...Knowing what they are gives you some leverage.

It didn’t occur to me that this dope has been put there by Reid to keep nuclear power out. Dang, I was just amazed by the non-operational quote about Reid reaching across the aisle. This guy is dangerous to our future!

...strictly 8 - 5 with no 50 or 60 hour weeks, early retirement, lavish retirement, life-long health care, double-dipping. What's not to like (except terminal boredom)?

I had a great paying job with an agency that had a long term government contract. If I didn’t have to drive 72 miles a day to and from work, I would have been able to handle the boredom. But the tremendous waste that I saw every single day disgusted me.

I “partnered” with Department of Energy on a number of development projects. I know exactly what you mean about the tremendous waste.
