Holocaust denier David Irving to begin leading tours of Auschwitz next week

Holocaust denier David Irving will begin leading tours of the former Nazi death camps of Auschwitz and Treblinka next week. The discredited British historian is also scheduled to lead a group of American and British tourists in the former Warsaw ghetto. His tour brochure promises an experience far removed from the "tourist attractions of Auschwitz". He will charge the tour participants $2,650 each. The plan has led Jewish organizations in London to express "deep concern".

Here on your left, the ovens where in fact delicious home-cooked meals greeted the delighted campers. Proceeding along, these bare shelves once featured Tempur-Pedic mattresses, where the campers could rest their tred muscles after vigorous Polo matches. These showers were where the campers enjoyed a comfortable steam bath, a chance to have Talmudic discussions with some of the great Rabbis of the day...

Wonder how he’s going to explain the huge pit of human remains (ashes) that are exposed right next to the bombed gas chambers? Cigarette and cigar ashes?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Fortunately nobody but those already totally committed deniers cares what this guy thinks. It’s not like he’s out there winning converts to his “side” of a non-existent controversy.

How do I ask this without being accused of being a Nazi? Why is Mein Kampf and Das Kapital available but this guy’s books are banned? I have no desire to read them but I am really curious. Are his writings more inflammatory then Hitler’s?

Well his books and Hitler's books are banned in places like Austria and Germany, which do not have a first ammendment.

Here in the USA we don't ban books, so they are not banned. A quick Amazon search yeilds a long list of his books for sale, many are new and still in print.

Sorry, I was under the impression that his “history” books were banned in the US. It always struck me as curious since you’re right-we don’t ban books. I guess I just misremembered. Thanks.

Not only is this guy out of it, he’s also a crook. I’d like to see the fools that would pay this guy $2,650 for this tour. Neo-Nazis? Oil Sheikhs?

My money says he doesn't make it out of Warsaw without getting the crap kicked out of him.

The National Geographic cable channel has been running a show called "The Hidden Holocaust," about the Einsatzgruppen, which operated mostly in Eastern Europe, and the films they showed (which Himmler eventually banned) were really frightening in their banality, where you had soldier looking bored at doing just another days work as them murdered row after row of civilians, and the fact that the neighbors of those about to be murdered were milling around watching "the show." BTW, they were the ones behind Babi-Yar.

One of my best and oldest friends took his family to Poland as part of a European vacation. My friend is descended from Polish Jews, although several generations back. He does not speak Polish. His last name was Americanized and appears to be German, and he is married to a WASP so his kids don't look particularly Jewish either.

He was quite appalled by the every-day, low-level anti-semitism that he encountered in his travels. There were many small incidents of guides making dismissive comments about "the Jews", of people claiming that Poland was being run by crypto-Jews and other things of that sort. He is not the type to even mention his Jewish background for months at a time, so I don't think it was a case of hyper-sensativity on his part.

While I don't remember all the details I am sure that his overall impression is that Poland today has a significant percent of anti-semites.

I read his Wikipedia bio, which is very detailed and seems to be pretty fair. The picture I get is of someone who began as a talented and legitimate historian, achieved a degree of fame and wealth, and slowly slipped further and further into the darkness as people became critical of him.

Reading his biography it seems he is descending into madness, perhaps a fitting fate for a historian who set out to 'set the record straight' on Hitler (who also descended into madness). I found his bio interesting: Wikipedia on David Irving

Regardless of the fact that I find many of his views idiotic and repugnant as an American I find the fact of his being jailed for nearly a year for holding them even worse.

The idea: "We shall outlaw Fascism and jail anyone who speaks in favor of it !!" is so funny that it's hard to believe they Austrians take it seriously.

This is touched on by Christopher Hitchens on Free Speech at a forum somewhere.

Reading up on the Holocaust, the Allies knew about Treblinka and what was happening to the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto long before they ever heard of Auschwitz. It’s hard to keep secret when 6-7000 Jews a day were being deported from the Warsaw Ghetto in the summer of 1942. Auschwitz was a boy scout camp compared to Treblinka.

It would be appropriate if neither Irving nor any of his customers survive the tour. Thanks Nachum.
