WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked legislation that would have repealed the law banning gays from serving openly in the military. The partisan vote was a defeat for Senate Democrats and gay rights advocates, who saw the bill as their last chance before November's elections to overturn the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

With the 56-43 vote, Democrats fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation. It also would have authorized $726 billion in defense spending including a pay raise for troops.

Watch for a future AP article titled "Republicans block pay raise for troops".

We can’t block anything! We are the little baby in the Federal Gov’ment, but wait till Nov. 2 2010. We a going to grow a pair that will shock the world. Peter Jennings will be spinning! The power of the pi**ed-off people is going to change everything!

P.S. We just want a constitutional government. Is that too much to ask??

Buttocited Press needs to voice WHY “don’t ask don’t tell” is such bad policy when homosexual journalists won’t tell their readers WHY these issues are so important to them.

Wow - when did the GOP regain control of the Senate?

I must have missed that little tidbit of news.

Time to stop sniffing Ajax, I guess.

Wouldn’t repealing DADT actually be a step back for the gays in the militaty, or was there something else in the bill which would both repeal DADT and change the rules that were in place before DADT?

This is a great bill, in that it really exemplifies some of the political shenanigans that take place in politics.

The Republicans kill the bill because they don’t support changing “Don’t Ask, Don’t tell.” Then some wanker comes along in a few years and takes a Republican to task for not backing a pay raise for the military.

“Yeah, he voted against giving the troops a raise!”

In this case, though, I don't think the AP is doing the Democrats any favors (though they are trying). The idea that Republicans are stopping the repeal of DADT against the gay-loving Democrats will increase support for Republicans. The few left-wing nutjobs who would have been miffed at Dems for stopping the bill would still have voted Dem anyway, so nothing lost there.

Nothing like actually waiting and asking the Military for their opinions. Very unlike Congress to go ahead without caring about the military’s thoughts... He it’s an election year, and the left is yearning for results - damn the military.

re: “Republicans block pay raise for troops”

You can bet that will be the major talking point of all the Libs until another convenient lie comes along. I see some faint hope that perhaps, just perhaps, the Republicans will grow a pair and make sure no one fails to hear how they prevented not a pay raise for the military but rather a move that was very unpopular with the troops who risk their lives and safety around the world!

This has been the Libs’ little trick for way too long and it’s usually worked like a charm because Republicans have or, or refused to, mount a campaign to offset the spin from the Left.

The article reads as if the central purpose of the bill was to repeal the “don’t-ask-don’t-tell” policy banning openly homosexual folks to serve in the military and the bill also had a little appropriation amendment attached to it to fund the military.

The Republicans didn’t have the full 41 senators voting — Lisa Murkowski didn’t vote — she is giving lessons on spelling her name correctly

The left will try to use it against us.

Let them. Every state that was allowed a vote on the homo agenda overwhelmingly voted "No way!"
They can't force "tolerance" on people. All they do is pretend there's tolerance to make themselves feel better.
