Law would crack down on roaring motorcycles (Another reason to hate California)
MSNBC ^ | 21 September 2010 | ALEJANDRA MOLINA

Posted on 09/22/2010 12:56:11 AM PDT by Terrence DoGood

"As the popularity of motorcycles increases, loud pipes become offensive to the general public out there," Scott added.

The roaring motorcycles -- primarily Harleys -- have led to a bill that would target motorcyclists who remove factory-installed emission control devices mandated by the federal government and replace them with custom, aftermarket parts that often make their bikes louder and more polluting.

SB 435 had been approved by the state legislature and now is sitting on the Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk. The Harley-riding governor has until Sept. 30 to sign the bill into law or veto it.

If the governor puts his stamp of approval on the measure, motorcyclists would be required to post a visible, unaltered Environment Protection Agency stamp to confirm the exhaust system is clean burning and does not exceed 80 decibels -- about the same noise level as a vacuum cleaner. The stamp would only be required for motorcycles and aftermarket parts made after 2013.

"The noise caused by illegally modified motorcycle exhaust systems is a major quality of life issue across the state," said state Sen. Fran Pavley, a Democrat from Agoura Hills. "Basic common sense and decency dictates that when a motorcycle drives by and sets off every car alarm on the street, that is too loud

First-time offenders would be fined up to $100; tickets could be voided if the owners bring their bikes back into compliance. Subsequent infractions would be subject to fines of $100 to $250.

If I pull up next to you at a stop light and start revving my motor and genuinely intimidate you...

Your assumption is telling. I am no more intimidated by a the sound of a bike than I am by the sound of a yapping chihuahua.

To assume that you are intimidating anyone is childish.

I do ride ,, a Triumph ,, and loud pipes are simply obnoxious. They truly add nothing to safety and in many cases they add little or no additional power (unless a/f ratios are adjusted). All motor vehicles are restricted as to the amount of noise they can make (measured at full throttle in the lowest gear that can be maintained for the test at a measured distance from the side).. and for good reason. If you feel you’re above being a good neighbor and can’t live with pipes that comply with FMV standards maybe you should re-evaluate why you ride.

Look at all the Freedom loving “Don’t tread on me”, smaller government, less intrusive restrictions to liberty, Constitutionalists defend the larger government, more intrusive, restriction on someone else’s freedoms and liberty when it suits them! Amazing.

“It’s not the pipes the SOBs object to. It’s the men on the bikes. “

No. It’s the noise.

Damn if I know who she is, I responded to some idiot who said he would intentionally pull out in front of me on my Harley and now I’m the freakin’ shoe bomber or something.

This has always been a great site, it’s my homepage on 3 of my 5 computers, but lately...

I guess they will kick me off of here for being a total Harley-Trash Turd or something, lol. Maybe I can start a write in campaign or something, but to whom would I write, lol. Whhoooops, there I go being offensive or whatever again.

Keep the faith brothers and sisters, don’t ever give up, not a single inch. How’s that for an offensive post, panty waists

I took some of the baffles out of the muffler for safety reasons. Cars hear you even if they can’t see you.

If you were really concerned about safety you wouldn't be riding a bike! I love the bikers saying noisy bikes are safer while at the same time they don't want to wear helmets.

“LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES”

No. Safe riding saves lives. Loud pipes ruin your hearing and aggravate road rage.

I know of one guy that lost his life because of his loud pipes.

The occasional loud bike or plane doesn’t bother me (I live under the approach to IAD runway 1R) but living in the DC area near I-66, too many Memorial Day Holiday weekends have been ruined by all the Rolling Thunder noise. I tried one year getting away to Myrtle Beach that weekend...oh yeah, Black Bike week... I’ve had it and they can pass all the laws they want now. Probably won’t accomplish anything anyway but I just don’t care if lawmakers do something to try to reduce that noise.

Well, when Mr. idiot thought it would be funny to talk about intentionally pulling out in front of someone like me, I had to walk away from my computer for a minute before I responded because I do not posses as much tact as you do and I know my response would have been very ugly. I have been riding for 30+ years and have had people pull out in front of me cuz they are not paying attention and it is not funny (someone nearly killed my sister doing that). Thanks for responding to him - it saved me the trouble.

Yah, I stopped riding because of safety. Louder is safer though. Thinking otherwise is just denying what is obvious. If it draws attention to the bike you are less likely to be unseen . . . and hit.

Many years ago, I was an audiological technician, meaning I gave hearing tests. The guy I worked for had a couple of testing booths set up in a trailer he towed to a company’s worksite so we could give the employees their hearing tests.

Before putting each person in the booth, we’d interview them, asking questions about their work and home life WRT loud noise. Whenever we found someone who used loud power tools, or firearms, or other loud noise sources and refused to wear hearing protection, we’d say:

“Keep doing that, and in a few years you’ll learn a new language.”

Almost always, the person would act a little surprised, and then we’d respond by moving our fingers and hands to simulate sign language. (My boss claimed to know sign language and told me we was signing, “Dumbass.” I have no idea if he was telling the truth or not, but it got a laugh.)

Remembering that few motorcycle riders wear hearing protection helps keep me from getting too angry when one of them rides through my neighborhood at 2am, rattling my windows and waking me up. I just think, “Dumbass”, smile, and go back to sleep.

I got a ticket for wearing hearing protection on my motorcycle, the officer explained that it prevented me from hearing emergency sirens....

You think you should be allowed to make as much noise as you like?

Do you think that the noise from a motorcycle going by causes permanent damage to ..... anything?
