Obama: D.C. Public Schools Are "Struggling"
NBC Washington ^ | September 27, 2010 | Staff

Posted on 09/27/2010 7:47:52 AM PDT by MaestroLC

President Barack Obama said Monday morning during a live interview on NBC that his daughters couldn't get the same quality education at a District public school that they currently get at their private school.

Obama says the schools in the District of Columbia are "struggling," though he said there have been some important steps made in the direction of reform.

The president's daughters, Malia and Sasha, attend the Sidwell Friends School, an elite private school. Public schools in Washington have faced criticism for their low test scores and high graduation rates.

The president took a question from Florida resident Kelly Burnett:

"I wanted to know if Malia and Sasha would get the same high-quality, rigorous education in a D.C. public school as compared to the very elite private academy they're attending now?"

"I'll be blunt with you. The answer is 'no' right now," Obama said. "The D.C. Public School systems are struggling. They have made some important strides over the past several years to move in the direction of reform. There are some terrific individual schools in the D.C. system. ...

"I'll be very honest with you. Given my position, if I wanted to find a great public school for them to be in, we could probably maneuver to do it. The broader problem is that for a mom or dad who are working hard and who don't have a bunch of connections, don't have a lot of choice in where they live, they should be getting the same quality education for their kids as anybody else."

Candidate Obama promised real education reform. He promised to slay vested interests. And yet, here he is today complaining about a District that had the one real school reform that was giving children a chance of success in education. But he killed that successful program with the passage of the omnibus spending bill in 2009. Obama and Democrats do not care about poor children and threw them into the gutter for the sake of the teachers union. Meanwhile, Obama gets to send his kids to an elite private school and denies that same opportunity to the rest of us. Typical of the Ruling Class elite.

FLASHBACK: (Big Government, December 31, 2009) Democrats Officially Kill Successful DC Voucher Program

Just kills me. As you point out, they had a voucher program that was working well. Obama and Eleanor Holmes Norton disapproved of it, and killed it.

I saw interviews with tearful black mothers saying "This is my baby's only hope! He can't go back to the public schools! He can't! He's doing really well at this private school, but I can't afford to send him there if I don't have this voucher!"

Obama is a hateful, hateful man.

I'd put the blame on who it belongs, the idiots in DC who voted 93% for 0bama with his stating flat out that he would do everything he could to kill school choice.

The same group of idiots also voted out the current mayor who was actually doing something to fix the schools in DC and replaced him with yet another liberal who has no interest in fixing the school system. Yes, they chose to go backwards.

Instead of sympathizing with the residents of DC, we should be doing everything we can to get the 23rd amendment to the Constitution repealed.

At $13,000 per student, D.C. is #1 in spending:

And the way to fix that isn’t to fire Michelle Rhee, it’s to CLONE her.

It is STUNNING he went down this road...especially now.
His complete disconnect with the country is amazing.

As is typical with the leftists in all matters... they want the ISSUE, not the SOLUTION.

Why did he say he could have pulled strings to get his daughters into the better public schools of DC? Why didn’t he do that then? It would have been a powerful statement if he had sent his own kids to public schools. But instead, he sent them to an elite private school.

It’s funny sometimes these topics come up, where liberals deride rich Republicans for not having a vested interest in public schools, and sending their own kids to private schools, etc. But we see that wealthy Democrats do the same thing, and avoid sending their own kids to the public schools. As much as good liberals praise the public schools, those with a choice avoid those schools.

I agree. Even separate from the fact that the DC population is overwhelmingly Black, anyone who has a job there is employeed by the Feds or some offshoot from the Feds.

They’re going to vote for the Leftist, elitist, Big Gov Guy every time. Then there is wailing and gnashing of teeth when their little Johhny suffers from the obvious Big Gov law.

What did they expect? Morons. Leftist-voting morons.

“Waiting for Superman” is being released. When this film hits, the NEA and Democrats will be embarrassed even further.

Dems will never figure out that you cannot just throw money at a problem and hope it fixes itself. Without engaged parents and dedicated teachers that money is just wasted.

under obama and his trained flying monkeys, the whole country is struggling. This is just another ploy for him to get his socialist/islamic hooks into the school children...first DC, then the nation.

Any animal is most vicious when it is wounded...so lookout for his lame-duck attacks.

Here is the thing. Your mayor is a crackhead and people keep voting for him, making them idiots. Well if your parents are idiots there’s a good chance you will be an idiot also.

Unfortunately for the one’s who aren’t idiots and want to escape to get a better education, the man they worhip cut that option off at the knees.

And in 2010 and 2012 the idiots will reelect the same idiots.

Idiots.
