Massachusetts Democrat Jim McGovern Says, ‘I Think the Constitution Is Wrong’
The Other McCain ^ | October 14, 2010 | Robert Stacy McCain

Posted on 10/14/2010 12:42:35 AM PDT by RobinMasters

BOSTON — Tonight in a debate at Shrewsbury High School, Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern shocked the audience when he declared, “I think the Constitution is wrong” (0:32):

The video

Discussing campaign-finance regulation, and apparently referring to the U.S. Supreme Court’s January Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission ruling, McGovern said:

“We have a lousy Supreme Court decision that has opened the floodgates, and so we have to deal within the realm of constitutionality. And a lot of the campaign finance bills that we have passed have been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. I think the Constitution is wrong. I don’t think that money is the same thing as human beings. I don’t think money equals free speech. I don’t think corporations should have the same equality as a regular voter in this district.”

I think it is fine for someone to think the constitution is wrong...as long as they abide by it. If they don’t like it, the constitution provides an avenue to change it...it’s called an amendment.

Yep, he should. I just got back from China....I think most of it is a real hell hole. And, I find it scary that we are borrowing all this money from them.

This is just a diversionary tactic, the latest liberal meme--foreign money=BAD Republicans taking foreign money=BAD Rules that allow anonymous donors=BAD

Of course, this only counts when it's Republicans involved. Democrats can accept all the foreign "donations" (ie: BRIBES) they want! Feh.

Last night, Coons said that corporations shouldn’t have free speech and that they are not the same as people.

Newsflash to stupid: WHO THE HELL MAKES UP CORPORATIONS - MONKEYS?

This assault on the Constitution is a very devious plan by the RATs to overthrow the government.

And why should unions and 527’s have free speech denied to people in a corporation?

I see a specific pattern that most rats are infected with developing here

In a subsequent question from the audience, Tina Hood of Worcester said “it blew my mind” when she heard McGovern say the Constitution is wrong. The Democratic congressman denied having said that and instead talked about the Constitution’s “general welfare” clause justifies social programs criticized by his Republican opponent, Marty Lamb.

When are these idiots going to learn that there is no “General Welfare” clause?!!

The words “General Welfare” only occur in Preamble which confer no powers on the government. The Preamble is a mission statement describing the purpose of the Constitution.

McGovern apparently believes the Constitution should prohibit two or more people associationg as a corporation from saying what a single person may say.

Justice Kennedy in United Citzens, a 5-4 decision, said: "If the First Amendment has any force, it prohibits Congress from fining or jailing citizens, or associations of citizens, for simply engaging in political speech." He also noted that since there was no way to distinguish between media and other corporations, these restrictions would allow Congress to suppress political speech in newspapers, books, television and blogs.

Foreign money influencing American elections is bad.

There is no proof that Republicans are doing that. It is just a wild accusation thrown to see if it sticks.

And it’s thrown at the US Chamber of Commerce, a completely separate entity that is not even a part of the republican party.

So, the liberals & the media want voters to make their decisions based on a wild accusation with no proof against some organization that is not the republican party.

Why not accuse the Rockefellar Foundation of receiving foreign money and that is why voters shouldn’t vote for democrats?

Talk about Wall Street vs. Main Street. The Democrats and Obama have bailed out Wall Street with trillions. They are having a big bonus party over there as they rocket into work across the Hudson in their cigarette boats, or text in the back of their cars as their drivers negotiate the streets. All this AFTER they crashed the economy and should have gone bankrupt and been sold off at fire sale prices to more careful and conservative firms. Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce is “un-American” and under attack as a foreign entity. Soros funded the left last election. Soros is a self-admitted NAZI; as un-American as you can get.

“General Welfare” opens Article I Section 8. Yes, it is certainly a mission statement of the enumerated powers which follow. The rat McGovern ignores the fact that Section 8 is one, single, long sentence that elaborates how the enumerated powers are components of a single thought, to provide for our common defense and general welfare.

James Madison in Federalist #41:
“Nothing is more natural or common than first to use a general phrase, and then to explain and qualify it by a recital of the particulars. But the idea of an enumeration of particulars which neither explain nor qualify the general meaning, and can have no other effect than to confound and mislead, is an absurdity.”
