Dems call for McCain investigation
Politico ^ | 2010-10-20 | Kasie Hunt

National Democrats have asked the Federal Election Commission to investigate whether Arizona Sen. John McCain violated campaign finance laws when his campaign paid to run ads for Republican House candidates in Arizona — charges the McCain campaign said are “baseless.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee filed a FEC complaint Tuesday against McCain and his campaign committee, Friends of John McCain, because of recent ads backing Ruth McClung, the GOP nominee in Arizona’s 7th District, and Jesse Kelly, who is running in the 8th District. The complaint also asks the FEC to investigate whether McClung, Kelly and their respective campaign committees were in violation of campaign finance laws.

The TV commercials for Kelly and McClung include the standard disclaimer required by McCain’s namesake landmark campaign finance legislation, “paid for by Friends of John McCain,” and feature McCain himself announcing, “I’m John McCain and I approve this message.”

Yet if McCain is spending more than $4,800 on each ad — the legal limit for a political contribution — it’s likely he’s breaking the campaign finance law, Democrats say in the complaint.

What a puke he is and he deserves everything his “friends” throw at him.

The commercials feature both McCain and Arizona’s junior senator, Jon Kyl, hitting Democratic Reps. Raul Grijalva, McClung’s opponent, and Gabrielle Giffords, who faces Kelly. Kelly is a tea party-backed conservative whose surprise primary win in August heartened the Giffords campaign, which has worked to paint him as too extreme for the swing district. McClung’s sudden prominence is a surprise—the heavily Hispanic 7th District is typically a safe Democratic seat. But Grijalva’s calls to boycott the state over a new anti-immigration law have hurt him—and the McCain ad seizes on the issue. “Grijalva even led the call for a boycott of our own state,” Kyl says in the ad.

Yeah, we should really be upset these ads are airing in aide of these very conservative House candidates - who this attack by the DCCC is really targeted against, not McCain.

Look at post 60 - not even posting anything relevant to what is going on here now, just irrelevant gibberish.

It's okay to lie about McCain if you don't like him and side with the Democrat Party's bogus charges and agenda against conservative House candidates - and even smear conservative House candidates like Jesse Kelly and Ruth McClung in the process.

Read the article -- the charges were against McCain, not Kelly or McClung. And no one is smearing anyone -- just enjoying the irony that McCain would be inconvenienced by his own misguided legislation. True -- the charges are bogus, but it does not eliminate McCain's role in bringing us the unconstitutional sham known as "campaign finance reform."

just irrelevant gibberish.

Now that their meme has been destroyed, that's all they've got left. It's an indefensible position to agree with democrat talking points against two good conservative candidates, no one will be able to defend that. Ergo: They try to rely on gibberish. Classic debating tactics worthy of DU.

The point he's making is that the intent of the article and the dem talking points is to bring down McClung and Kelly, not McCain (unfortunately).

That's what has some offended here.

John McCain is a real American hero. I think he has a great shot at 2012. I dont know why you pick on him so much. He has Americas best interest at heart. He will get all those illegals to vote Republican by using his secret weapon daughter Megan. They love chubby dumb blonds who say “You know” over and over.

Then you're too thin skinned, IMO.

Sheesh! It's politics. Being "offended" isn't gonna get you very far.

Read the article -- the charges were against McCain, not Kelly or McClung. And no one is smearing anyone

You did not read the article very carefully. The targets are McClung and Kelly as this benefits them, not McCain, and they want those ads off the air, and if their allegations were true, that would require wrongdoing on the part of McClung and Kelly in the form of illegal coordination. The DCCC is not the DSCC and their motive is specifically to harm Kelly and McClung, not McCain.

just enjoying the irony that McCain would be inconvenienced by his own misguided legislation.

If the charges are bogus he's not being inconvenienced by the legislation - just by bogus charges. Bogus charges can be filed regardless of whether that legislation exists or not.

True -- the charges are bogus, but it does not eliminate McCain's role in bringing us the unconstitutional sham known as "campaign finance reform.

If you get diarrhea and have to take Immodium AD it doesn't eliminate McCain's role in passing that awful legislation either, but it wouldn't really be relevant to what is going on in that situation, either (even if you did have a similar feeling in your stomach when it passed into law).

RE :”Let's count how many sympathetic comments McCain gets here” ...Three McCain defenders so far. Still not gaining critical mass

Now I count four. The fourth one is a real nutcase. Checkout out this McCain nutcase at :#67

BTW : I am offended by something, but I forgot what.

You did not read the article very carefully.

You're right -- I did not read that part initially.

I wish no ill will on McClung and Kelly. However, I do not see that ads by John McCain are going to help their campaign. I have been particularly impressed with Kelly but if he were to hitch his wagon to the traitorous McCain, I would be very disappointed.

So, I offer a simple solution. In the interest of conservatism, I think it would be best if John McCain step down from office. /dreamin'

If he lost his senate seat, I actually wouldn’t mind dems running that for one term. It would be worth the cost of getting rid of him.

These so called “conservatives” fall for this kind of RAT stunt every time. My guess is not one supported anyone with half a chance to beat McCain in 08.

Very good point. Although it may be a real kick to slam the McCains the true target here is the Democrat corruption involving campaign finance. Democrat corruption that is never investigated and even when clearly in your face... never prosecuted.
