A bodyboarder killed by a shark at a Central California beach cried out to his friend for help as the shark flashed out of the water, bit into his leg and pulled him under in a tide of blood, the friend said Friday.
Matthew Garcia was surfing 2 feet from his friend, 19-year-old Lucas Ransom, when the shark attacked, he said. The whole incident lasted seconds.
"When the shark hit him, he just said, 'Help me, dude!' He knew what was going on," Garcia told The Associated Press. "It was really fast. You just saw a red wave and this water is blue — as blue as it could ever be — and it was just red, the whole wave."

It’s a bit more dangerous in proximity to Great White sharks.
Perhaps the ban on killing great white sharks along the Cali coast was overdone...

Ransom’s left leg was ripped off at the pelvis, his parents said. Garcia tried to give him chest compressions as he pulled him to shore. But he was bleeding profusely and died before they got there.
Witnesses told authorities that the young men were about 100 yards offshore when the attack occurred. Fire personnel from Vandenberg Air Force Base pronounced Ransom dead at the scene. Authorities quickly closed Surf Beach and two other beaches nearby for at least 72 hours. Surf Beach is on Vandenberg’s 42 miles of coastline, but the public has access to it from California Highway 246.
Federal and state wildlife officials are working to identify the type of shark that attacked Ransom. A shark expert said Friday that, based on its behavior and Ransom’s injury, it most likely was a great white.
“It takes a shark of massive size and jaw to inflict that kind of injury,” said Andrew Nosal of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

The report says his leg was ripped off at the pelvis. No place to put a tourniquet, however they could have applied pressure to the large arteries in the groin, but that is hard to do in the water and probably too late anyway. A person bleeds out fast when those big arteries are severed.
Seems the big whales and sharks are very close to to the California shore this year. My son and I saw huge gray whales, 40 ft long, below us at the cliffs at Pt. Reyes a couple months ago (really cool looking DOWN on a gray whale!). A friend in Half Moon Bay says she sees whales just offshore where they haven’t been before. Seems like the food supply is much closer to shore than usual.
Hmmmm, my guess is the water is a bit cooler this year. Game fish are maybe moving closer to shore where the water can warm more easily. That then brings the predators in ...

BTW, Rodney Fox and his famous survival of a Great White attack in Australia was also the subject of a RDFPA article, back in the sixties. I remember that one, too.
I knew, personally, two people who were killed in hog(the name people who work in sawmills give to chippers)accidents. It doesn't take long to bleed to death and the shock of getting part of your body chewed off in mere seconds usually sends the person into shock very quickly. If you think it is bad to read about it, it is even worse when you are there.
No, it was the bleeding heart campaign to protect those cute little crustacean-crunching sea otters that was overdone. They're the great whites' favorite munchies and as they've moved southward the sharks have followed, with very predictable consequences.
