Raleigh, N.C. — Democrat Elaine Marshall has narrowed the gap with U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, but she still trails by a wide margin a week before the election, according to a WRAL News Poll released Tuesday.

SurveyUSA polled 1,000 North Carolina residents Friday through Monday; 857 were registered voters and 590 said they were likely to vote.

If the election were held now, Burr would garner 53 percent of the ballots cast by likely voters to Marshall's 38 percent. Libertarian Mike Beitler would finish with 5 percent of the vote, according to the poll.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

In mid-September, Burr held a 58 to 34 percent lead in a similar poll.

What’s the word on Lawson/Price? Haven’t seen a poll, though if you count the yard signs it looks like Lawson 10-1.

RCP has the race at likely Dem, but I have a gut feeling that it’s a toss-up right now.

The lying dim party pollsters will be known by their lies, posted before this election as legitimate polling data. These tightening races were “predicted” for the dims when Reagan and the republicans smashed catah and the evilcrats, in the biggest rout in American History... and History is about to repeat itself. FU polling demons for satan!

Price and Lawson race should be within 5%. I want to know what is happening with Renee Elmers and that idiot Bob Etheridge.

Regarding Burr and Marshall, he should win it by 10 to 15 % margin. It is huge considering the dems registration advantage and a state was won by Obama.

When Reagan smashed Mondale, they never released any polls.

"Richard Burr"?? N. Carolina has an incumbent senator named "Richard Burr"? Who knew? I never heard of the guy. Can he possibly keep a lower profile? Does he fight the good fight in the Senate? Does he do anything?

“Does he fight the good fight in the Senate? Does he do anything?”
Mostly he just introduces feel-good Resolutions. But, he is a Republican, so he prevents a Democrat from holding the seat. And he voted against Obamacare.

You haven't heard of him because he's a workhorse, not a showhorse. Dependably conservative, not flamboyant, and not running for President. We could use more like him.

Burr has deliberately avoided the spotlight, in contrast to the John Edwards-type camera-chasers.

He has worked on some good legislation, including a conservative health care reform proposal.

But I agree with you and many others, and would prefer that he be more vocal and public in his opposition to the liberal agenda and his advancement of conservatism.

I am not surprised at all. People are saying vote anything but D.

I already voted and they had the straight party ticket and I voted individually For all Republicans and I am a registered Indy. There was even a spot where it was just a Dem running and I would not check off his name.

KHR has the race at -1.5 or leans-Democratic. That is a ton closer than I thought it was and good news for Renee. She could still win, but it’s still too early to say.

Yes, we could. Of course, that will not stop some people from whining about him. It gets very tiresome.

Burr’s all right- he’s good on guns, actually IS a North Carolinian (I despise politicos who just have a post office box here, like say, Elizabeth Dole) and he’s better than the communist bat Hagan who occupies our other Senate seat. And his office at least answers correspondence....

That’s not the same seat. Democrat Kay Hagan is in the Jesse Helms seat (and with Burr’s reelection, it will become the “cursed” seat).

The Burr seat history of the past 42 years:
1968, Democrat Sam Ervin wins final term (last to be reelected in this seat)
1974, Democrat Robert Morgan wins
1980, Morgan defeated by Republican John East
1986, East commits suicide, Republican Jim Broyhill appointed
11/1986, Broyhill defeated by Democrat Terry Sanford
1992, Sanford defeated by Republican Lauch Faircloth
1998, Faircloth defeated by Democrat John Edwards
2004, Edwards quits, Republican Richard Burr wins seat
