SANTA CRUZ - Employees of the local Salvation Army say they can offer the next best thing to the recently-canceled veteran's Thanksgiving dinner: their own community meal.
The downtown nonprofit is more than doubling its shopping list so folks missing out on the traditional vets' dinner have another option.
"We are totally happy to have anybody that doesn't have a place to go on Thanksgiving join us," said Denise Acosta, social services director of the Santa Cruz Salvation Army chapter. "And we want to extend a formal invitation to our honorable veterans."
The Salvation Army's Thanksgiving dinner, it should be noted, comes on the Tuesday before the holiday, not Thanksgiving Day. Late that week, the nonprofit is busy getting the red kettles out and launching its Christmas campaign for the needy.
Earlier this month, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5888 announced that it was canceling its Thanksgiving meal because of the closure of the Veterans Memorial Building, where the meal has long been held. County leaders, who shut down the facility in January because of safety issues, had offered an alternative venue, but veterans said they couldn't turn things around in time.
The veterans' dinner, which had been a 24-year tradition, had provided meals for up to 1,000 people needing food or company over the holiday.
"It's important for the community to be able to offer these meals to people," said county Supervisor Neal Coonerty, who tried to get the vets to reconsider canceling their meal. "I'm glad that (other) people have stepped forward."
Acosta says the Salvation Army dinner, which has taken place for at least a decade, has served about 800 people annually. This year, they're preparing for an additional 1,000.
"Why not add a few more," she said.
On the menu are the usual Thanksgiving fare: turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Having lived in Boulder Creek for fourteen years, this does not surprise me.
I love the Salvation Army. More power to them having to exist among those phony-baloneys in Santa Cruz.

The Salvation Army has been a force for good since its inception. They spend a greater percentage of the money they collect to help people than any other charity.
They are hands on. I always support them and even volunteer to help when I can.
I hear ya bro. That place drips with Liberal scum. At least it did in ‘93 when last was there.
My thoughts are in Salinas these days, where gangsters are throwing people off the freeway overpasses and shooting at gangster high-schoolers right in the school yards.
The Mexican drug cartels are securing their territories, it won’t be long before Santa Cruz is brought under their control.
Fortunately for quite a few years now, I don't have to go through Santa Cruz to get to anywhere worth seeing.
After the UC retards took over the city I haven't been anywhere near it.
Since my tradition for many years now is to support my Local Salvation Army as my only charity, I will have to check and see if I can afford to send the Santa Cruz chapter a modest donation. If I lived closer, I would also seriously consider volunteering to help on that day.
