Columbia, SC -- She’s conquered music, makes a fashion statement, has influenced politics… now she’s a course subject at the University of South Carolina. I’m talking about Lady Gaga. Starting this spring the University will offer a course titled “Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame”.

Longtime sociology professor – Mathiew Deflem – will be teaching the course. Normally his focus is on criminology, policing, and the sociology of law. But the professor admits that he is a huge fan of Lady Gaga. To his knowledge this is the only course of it’s kind in the country.

Well considering they are the Cocks, perhaps it’s appropriate to study Lady Gaga, since she has one.

And then these boneheads with “tuition receipts” can’t figure out why no one will hire them.

Are you a tenured faculty member who, for whatever reason, no longer remembers anything worth teaching? No problem, brother! We've got the exact solution to your... ahh... little problem.

A course on Lady Gaga! No, really! It's a great idea! Taxpayers who are paying most of your nice fat salary will go nuts over it! I mean after all, it's South Carolina, right? Alvin Greene country, right? No downside in sight!

USC has several campuses (campi?). Wonder which one will be defiled with this "course?" Article doesn't say.

Oh, I dunno. I don't pay a lot of attention to her, but LG seems kinda neat to me. I suspect there's some real intelligence and humor underlying her outrageous shtick, and she seems to have a firm grasp of the public mind. Maybe she is worth a college course.

This is mild compared to some of the leftist crap that got course titles:
“Social Justice in the 21st Century”
“Race, Class, and Gender in the Media” (Lefties attacking their own)
“Latin@ history” (Really, that is the course title)
“Islam and Peace” (Kevin Barrett taught this)
“Politics of Social Justice Movements”

Well, actually, over the course of a lifetime I've seen hundreds of courses that were much stupider than this.

“We’re going to look at Lady Gaga as a social event. So it’s not the person, and it’s not the music. It’s more this thing out there in society that has ten million followers on Facebook and six million on Twitter. I mean, that’s a social phenomenon. It’s a global social phenomenon. So the central question of the course is, this fame, which is ironically also the theme of her first records, how can it be accounted for? What are some of the mechanisms and some of the conditions of Lady Gaga’s rise to popularity? What does it mean, and how does a person become famous?”

In a way, Lady Gaga is the perfect example of a phenomenon that has inflicted the western world--Europe as well as America--for the past 40 years or so. Why do certain people become celebrities for no discernable reason?

It seems to me that up until around 1968, a watershed year in cultural history, people were usually famous for some REASON. They accomplished great things. They were great singers, actors, or composers. They were outstandingly handsome or beautiful.

But if you pick up the latest edition of People Magazine, if you look at the latest list of Hollywood starts, if you look at the kind of people who are elected to public office, if you look at the crappy books on the bestseller list, or the even worse books that are endorsed by the literary critics, how do you explain all that?

Or look at Muchelle Obama? How can you account for her getting onto the covers of an endless series of magazines? How do you account for the many people who think she is absolutely wonderful? Why on earth would even a single person pick up a magazine from the newsrack with her on the cover? But they do.

It's a subject I've been interested in for a long time, although I can't say I've ever thought about doing a scholarly study on it. But maybe I should have.

My old friend Harold Bloom used to say that the hippy generation were much like lemmings. That’s one explanation. Lemmings get an idea into their tiny little heads—it certainly doesn’t have to be a rational idea—and they run with it, right off a cliff, all sticking together.

Postmodern celebrity is much like that, IMHO.

“She’s conquered music, makes a fashion statement, has influenced politics”
I must be from another planet because I missed all of this.
I’d fail the course because I’d skip all of the classes.
What is the school thinking when the accepted this guy’s course proposal? That school needs to be defunded!!!
