How Harry Reid Won Re-Election
CNS News ^ | Michael R Blood

Las Vegas (AP) - Republicans said for months that if the Nevada Senate race was a referendum on Harry Reid, the unpopular Majority Leader would lose. Reid didn't let that happen. He adeptly painted opponent Sharron Angle as an extremist immediately after she won her primary -- and proceeded to make the contest as much about her awkward and unconventional statements as Reid's own troubles.

Then he deployed his secret weapon: a powerful turnout machine that brought Democratic and Hispanic voters out to the polls in droves.

Reid's relentless TV ad assault against Angle and his powerful get-out-the-vote effort were huge factors in his no-holds-barred victory over Angle on a day when Republicans seized control of the House and gained Senate seats.

Talking with reporters Wednesday, Reid pointed to Angle's proposal to privatize Social Security as a defining contrast between them. He calls it one of the great government programs in history.

Reid's first negative TV ad of the campaign, put up just days after the June primary, portrayed Angle as a heartless budget-slasher who would abandon the elderly. "Sharron Angle wants to wipe out Social Security," a narrator intoned darkly. "What's next?"

Angle argued that she wanted to make changes only for younger workers, but the damage was done.

Geeze, always the broad brush. For those that are gleefully telling us in Nevada we got what we deserve, do you know that it was two Cities that are full of Unions and California transplants that outvoted the rest of the state?

Harry had a lot of help from Harrah’s. We ought to keep that in mind before planning any trips to NV.

Well, when the rest of the country recovers from this recession and NV and CA don't or lag behind, the people in those states will learn that elections have consequences.

Reid’s win is the best thing for the GOP. The impression will be that him and O are responsible for failures from now until the 2012 election.

Yeah, you're right. There is a silver lining to this after all. :^)

Six years can be a life time for a guy Harry’s age. Luckily Nev. now has a Republican governor...

Yep, don’t go to Harrahs anywhere int he country. They are all over, but do not patronize them. They were perfectly willing to crash this country in order to line their own pockets. If they will cheat voters, they will cheat patrons. Stay away from Harrahs.

My question is: If it’s such a good turnout machine, how come Reid’s son didn’t win? He got killed!

nevada deserves to fail!

with 17% unemployment, and counting people who have given up

looking for jobs, 22% unemployment,

nevada is near the great depression levels of unemployment.

to vote for more of the same, is stupid.

Just checked their website to see which hotels are Harrah’s. Paris, Caesars, Planet Hollywood and Rio to name a few. We’ve been to Paris and will never return. Some of the rudest people ever working there.

Not a single explanation in that article seems plausible. The GOP governor won 380k to 298k... the GOP House seats totaled 356k to 315k... but Harry Reid wins by 360k to 320k. That means that 45,000 people voted for the GOP House seat, but also voted for Harry... and that 62,000 people voted for the GOP Governor, but also voted for Harry Reid. One out of every 7-8 GOP voters had such a significant disconnect. Why? Sorry, but I don't buy that it was because "Harry got his message out with a barrage of last-minute ads".

Nevadans know who and what he is. The Nevada DEM-ontrolled Congress lost its super-majority, the House and Gov seats went GOP, and it was for the same reason as the rest of the country: a repudiation of the Reid/Pelosi?Obama agenda... and one of the architects of that agenda gets a pass by ~13% of those otherwise voting against that agenda? I really don't buy that. I'd like an investigation into this one.

In Ohio, when Howard Metzenbaum ran for election, he would employ the same scare tactics. Don’t vote for the Republicans — they are going to take away your social security. Worked every time.

Nevadans got what they deserve!

Yes they did. So did Californians, apparently. I expect that those 2 states will continue to drive residents over the borders into neighboring states. Taxes will continue to rise, but won't cover the defictits. Tax payers and businesses will flee. Home values will continue to plummet long after other parts of the country begin to recover.

I still wonder how much criminals activity was done to get this old fart reelected

A state economy and tourism based on gambling is a criminal enterprise to start with, no surprise here. I'm just proud of Sharron Angle's willingness to do battle with pure evil.

Reid, who in open Congress accused our military of murder, the intentional killing of innocent civilians and constantly beat the drum of defeatism is unrepentant.

Bring back the Rule of Law, honor the US Constitution, investigate, prosecute and incarcerate now, ASAP, for the honor of our sons and daughters serving their country.
