RIP Sparky. The 1984 Wire to Wire Tigers are a very fond memory of my youthful days.

Thank you for making part of my childhood a happy one. 1975-76 Reds were the best team(s) in many years.

Ernie Harwell and Sparky, both gone exactly six months apart. What a low blow for Michigan. :(

The other day there was a thread here about Sparky’s family placing him in hospice care due to deterioration from dementia. At 76??

Sad to see him go. I was shocked that he was only 76. He looked old when he was the Reds' manager in the 1970s, but he was only 36 when he started.

My cousin had the opportunity to play for Sparky Anderson with the Tigers (in one of his “cups of coffee” in the big leagues). He told me a story about playing for Sparky during spring training one year.

He was an outfielder, and a batter hit a long drive that my cousin ran straight back to center field to try and track down the ball, but he shyed away from the centerfield wall... the ball hit the wall and ended up as a triple. Sparky told my cousin, “Son, if you run into that wall and hurt yourself, we can fix you up as good as new... but once that ball hits the wall, that out is gone forever.”

RIP Skipper Sparky!

This is from Cincinnati (this morning): “John Bench told me last night that Sparky Anderson has stopped eating and the family has declined to have him fed through a tube. Among the most beloved figures in our local sports history is about to leave us.”

Johnny Bench was my boyhood idol, making the Reds my second favorite team. I remember the elation when learning Sparky was coming to Detroit in ‘79.
