State Legislators Must Now Fix Voter Registration Law
Rick Santorum - Morning in America | 11/5/2010 | Chiller

Posted on 11/05/2010 6:59:15 AM PDT by chiller

Now IS the time for state legislators to fix fraud-ridden voter registration laws. This is one of many crucial steps needed to eliminate voter fraud and to counter George Soros' SoS Sec/State agenda.

Rick Santorum had a bit late on his Friday show. The Iowa elections official that was interviewed is pushing for provisional status for all same day registrees.

This vanity thread is an attempt to put this on the radar with state houses now in Republican control.

Even better is to purge all lists and require people to re-register every year, much like you have to renew your car registration every year.

And I’d make people do it at the proper voter registration office, not through the motor vehicle department (too much fraud there). Heck, people are used to making short trips to shop, see a movie, or enjoy a restaurant. I think once per year isn’t too much to ask to have people visit a voter registration establishment.

There should be a cut-off for registration at 30-60 days before an election so the voter rolls can be finalized. If you are under 18, but will be 18 on or before election day, you can register.

Having worked as a precinct officer in Fairfax County, VA for several election cycles, as both chief and assistant chief, this would go a long way toward reducing fraud.

Oh, and in 2000, Virginia started requiring photo ID when you check in. Actually, you have to give them your ID, and state your full name and address so they can verify you.

1) Voter rolls should be purged after each major election. Requiring people who wish to vote to register every two years or so (states with odd election cycles like Virginia will need to customize this process, obviously) is not a major hardship. It can be done by mail, as long as ID requirements to actually vote are also included. For those voting absentee, they will need to provide ID at some point in the process.

2) Technology should be standardized. The optimal choice seems to be optical scan paper ballots. This leaves a paper trail, voters can verify their ballot on a non-tabulating scanner before casting the completed ballot, and there are no “chads” or similar fragile elements that can be manipulated (intentionally or otherwise) after the fact.

Rather than pick a specific vendor, the government should define a specification that scanner vendors will have to adhere to.

3) Cast ballots should go into a single locked container large enough to handle all of the ballots for the precinct. This container must be verified to be empty, locked, and remain in plain view for the entire election day, when the ballots are removed and processed in the open. Precinct results must be certified and sent to the state elections board within one hour of the last vote being cast. (Write-ins and provisional ballots should be set aside and placed in a locked container for later processing.)

4) Regulations in place at the start of the election day cannot be modified in any fashion, even by court order, for the duration of that election.

5) Absentee ballots are due (not just postmarked) no later than election day . States receiving requests for absentee ballots must deliver (not postmark) them no later than 30 days prior to the election, or 7 days after receipt of the request, whichever is later. Proper allowance for post time (including, but not limited to APO/FPO or foreign mail) must be made by both the state and the voter.

U.S. citizens living abroad may opt to turn in a completed absentee ballot to any U.S. embassy or consulate; however this must be done no later than 7 days prior to the election.

Voter rolls should be purged after each major election.

Texas does something similar now except that it’s on an every two year cycle. However you don’t have to reregister each cycle. What they do is send new voter registration certificates to your existing mailing address and it’s not supposed to be forwarded by the Post Office but rather returned to the registrar for deletion if not deliverable. That doesn’t keep someone from keeping the card and voting as if they were the registered voter since Texas doesn’t require photo voter ID however the ID presented must match the registration.

Here’s a listing of state ID requirements for voting. I’m not sure how accurate it is.

Add one more thing to that list:

No bags of “found” ballots should be allowed after the actual Tuesday.

“Ink Finger” should be part of OUR culture, too.

Actually, I'd like to see that too.
