Singapore Airlines says it is canceling flights to and from Indonesia's capital following the eruption of the country's most volatile volcano.

The carrier made the announcement on its website Saturday.

Indonesia's most volatile mountain — around 280 miles (450 kilometers) west of Jakarta — unleashed its most powerful eruption in a century Friday.

Towering plumes of ash continued to rise from the mountain Saturday, dusting windshields, rooftops and leaves on trees hundreds of miles (kilometers) away.

It was not immediately clear when Singapore Airlines would resume flights.

That's an interesting decision since I believe that the Kenyan usurper is scheduled to fly to Jakarta on Tuesday (it's the last item mentioned at Obama's India visit: Detailed itinerary.)

If conditions are bad enough that Singapore Airlines won't take any chances in flying there, I wonder how in good conscience the Kenyan Clown and his circus can take such risks?

It is better to prohibit moslems from flying than to shut down the international airline industry.

When volcanic ash gets into a jet engine it can shut it down in a heartbeat.Given that,Hussein's very unlikely to make the trip,IMO.He and the Mrs will probably stop off in Spain instead.

Uh, it’s shutting down because of a volcano, not because of any human agency.

I dashed through Jakarta airport as fast as I could to get to a gate before it closed. Even the soldiers were laughing. They’re pretty friendly to westerners in Indonesia, let’s keep it that way.

On another note, I find Singapore Airlines to be the best in the World.

It absolutely is. I lived in Singapore for 4 years in the mid 90's and flew Sing Air often. The stewardesses love children! And the airport is great too.

My husband is actually in Singapore right now. He flies back and forth from Singapore to India often.

We lived in Singapore for 5 years.

One thing I loved about Singapore Airlines was the silverware (not plastic) and real china they would give you to eat from and a wonderful menu from which to choose your meals.

I wonder if they still do that.

Yes, they’re an excellent airlines.

What years did you live in Singapore? We lived there from 1994-1998. We moved to HK for 1 year in 1998.

The island gets boring fast as a place to live

Why is that? Too small and crowded, feeling like fenced in?

After a while you start to feel like Patrick McGoohan in the The Prisoner.
