Some 183 organisations from 42 countries have come together to issue a plea to world leaders to impose a tax on financial transactions to help meet the costs of the economic crisis.

The group is the largest coalition yet to demand that a tax is levied on international financial transactions.

Members include Britain's Robin Hood Tax campaign, supported by the TUC, Friends of the Earth and ActionAid.

Their plea comes ahead of the summit of leaders of G20 economic powers in the South Korean capital Seoul on November 11-12.

The issue of measures needed to stabilise the world economy and boost the global recovery are set to be discussed.

Today's letter is addressed to G20 leaders including Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama, and is signed by development, health, education and environmental charities and unions from 16 of the G20 countries.

They argue that a financial tax would help meet the costs "of the global financial and economic crisis, including reducing the unacceptably high rate of job loss, and achieve key development, health, education and climate change objectives in developing countries".

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Governments around the world are embarking on a sweeping programme of austerity measures that will lead to huge job losses and cuts in services that the most vulnerable in society rely upon....

I’m sure Obama thinks a “Robin Hood Tax” is a capital idea, but I think even he isn’t dumb enough not to realize that he’d be crucified politically if he went along with it.

The rich in those days, beyond the king, were the “government” so technically you are both correct.

“Robin Hood Tax” is an oxymoron. Robin Hood robed the tax collectors and gave back to the tax payers.

I don’t buy off on the underlying premise that the debt can or should be paid off. Why should Americans work themselves to death to pay a debt owed to the chinese communists and saudis? One that in most instances they had no part in accumulating.

If my drunk neighbor down the street chooses to spend himself into the poorhouse, I’m not responsible for his debts. So why am I then responsible for the debts of those drunk on power in DC

“The socialists realize that socialism is dead unless it can suck the blood of the remaining productive economies.”

I no longer see the financiers as representative of productive economies. They are a club onto their own whose machinations predominantly benefit their own, instead of raising capital as they once did for real and productive enterprise that benefits the country and economy.

Wall St is mostly a casino of thieves where money changes hands and deals are made and huge compensation is paid yet it benefits no one except the players. Yeah I’d favor taxing WS transactions by the USA (not UN) and invest the money in USA infrastructure which would come back and benefit the economy. Wall St has already taxed us too much via taxpayer bailouts and Fed Reserve. It should come back to rebuild the USA instead of going to China etc.

I strongly favor protecting our sovereignty and throwing out so-called UN treaties that diminish our sovereignty.

Do you have some disease that makes you incontinently shriek insults every so often?

Britain isn’t behind this tax initiative. In fact it would be the single greatest threat to her financial industry.

Sounds a lot like the Stamp Act to me . . .

Don’t these fools have anyone in their internationalist organization who knows American & British history?

Taxation without representation worked out well 235 years ago. Maybe it's time to try it again?

It's like socialism/communism. It's never worked, so try it again. Maybe this time the "right" people will be in charge.

Got to check my ammo supply...
