Progressive leaders back Clyburn over Hoyer for minority whip post
The Hill ^ | 11/8/2010 | Russell Berman

Posted on 11/09/2010 3:04:15 AM PST by markomalley

Both House leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus are throwing their support behind Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) in his race against Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) for minority whip.

"I support Mr. Clyburn. They both have been effective leaders, but Jim Clyburn is our whip, and he’s been a good whip,” the co-chairwoman of the caucus, Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.), told The Hill. Woolsey said the group’s co-chairman, Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), was also backing Clyburn, although the caucus as a whole was not taking a position in the intra-party battle.

“We’ll be working it [for Clyburn], but not for the progressive caucus,” Woolsey said. Grijalva was not immediately available for comment.

House majority leader Hoyer is challenging majority whip Clyburn for his post in the new Democratic minority after Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Friday she would seek to remain as party leader. While House liberals would be expected to line up behind Clyburn, Hoyer — a favorite of centrists and Blue Dogs — has announced endorsements from several members of the caucus, including Reps. Jared Polis (Colo.) and Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.).

Woolsey panned a proposal floated by the Hoyer camp for each of the top four House Democratic leaders to move down a post in order of their rank in the 112th Congress. That would make Pelosi the minority leader, Hoyer the whip, Clyburn the caucus chairman, Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) the vice chairman and would bump the current vice chairman, Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), out of the leadership. Both Larson and Becerra are running to keep their jobs.

“The bump-down scenario I don’t think is a solution,” Woolsey said. “My solution is not to force a runoff between John Larson and Xavier.”

She added that party leaders are trying to work out a deal that would satisfy the contenders and that she hoped it could be resolved in the coming days.

Woolsey said both the progressive caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus had to be represented “fully and with respect” in the Democratic leadership. “We’re going to play a key role in this next Congress, and that diversity has to be represented in the leadership,” she said.

Good analysis CP.

Right now the Cong. Progressive Caucus makes up nearly 40% of the Dem. Reps. That percentage has grown not shrunk with this election.

The Congressional Dems are more socialistic than ever. If Hoyer goes, though, especially if it is a bad blood situation, we benefit as we’ll be able to peel off more moderate Dems.

Now, we get to benefit from “bi-partisanship”. This further bloodies Obama.

Watch for the media capons to work hard to split up the GOP, particularly in the Senate. They’ve already tried to get us to hate Kirk.

Not sure about the last paragraph but the entire rest of your commentary is on the money.

Hoyer if you recall ran against Miss Madam for the job, and lost. She is a bitter old lefty and such insolence was not to be tolerated. Remember her call for civility, right, Nazi the civil.

Clyburn will be an excellent example for any conservative to attack, he is beyond a racist, he simply hates white people, and probably any other minority that tries to out do his base in handouts. Unfortunately guys like him and people like Miss Madam are far too strong in their base, like Bwaney Frank, to be removed so we just have to maginalize them or just let them do it for us. The best way it to ensure the dems never ever take control of the house again.

Of course it will be Clyburn. He is Black. It is therefore forbidden for a Dem to vote for any other candidate.

Clyburn is the aXXhole who claimed the Tea Party called him n****r and spit at him when he was wading through the crowd and gloating at them last March

I say “YES” for a member of the perpetually offended race pimping victim class to become minority whip.

Someone has to carry Nancy Pelosi’s purse, why not a member of the CBC

I think you are way to early to make that statement.

If the Clinton side of the dem party decides that harming the party for a few years is worth taking out the communist in nuclear fashion then you will have a dem party only a little less demented, though one must remember Hillary care does not make them to far off from the Obama side of the party. Clintons took credit for the bills coming out of a republican house and senate to look centrist, but they really are not.

Rino's are still in charge of the republican party and unless a real hard line conservative can win the Republican primary and then the presidential election Rinos will still be in charge.

Here in South Carolina, Clyburn acts like he is a king.

Criticize him in any way and the earth will stop rotating, the sun will not give its light, and all creatures will fall silent.

Or they should, anyway. And they’re all guilty of racism if they don’t!

Ken Hamblin, the Black Avenger (black talk show host out of Denver some years ago) absolved my White Guilt some years ago. A decade or more.

Here, I found a copy of the certificate he used to have on his web site:

The saddest element of current race relations in America is the belief held by way too many Blacks that they can’t be successful without government (i.e. the White man’s) help (and his free money.)

And who sells them this BS?

Jessie Jackson, Sharpton, Clyburn, et.al

Did you ever read “White Guilt” by Shelby Steele?

Steele, like Obama, is half black, from Chicago and was a student radical in college.

But about 10 years after college, he work up one morning and realized the Black Liberalism was nothing more than a new set of chains.

He is now the Distinguished Herbert Hoover Professor at Stamford, and an incredible writer.

Recommend his works highly.

Will check out Shelby Steele.

Meanwhile, “White Guilt” reminds me of radio host Ken Hamblin, AKA The Black Avenger, who used to issue “Certificates of Absolution” to those who requested to be released from their own feelings of white guilt.

Still have mine. It was certified to be in effect by Ken Hamblin “or any other thinking black American”.
