Just spoke with old friend, very senior retired USAF general officer/pilot. Says his contacts, many of whom were his "boys," have no idea what Pacific missile is/was

As I was calling him, he was calling me to run my old network traps to see if anyone at the network desks in NY or DC have any idea what this was!

Data from video seems to be that it was large, ballistic, (not cruise) sub-launched. Course seemed to be trans-polar, so could have impacted in Arctic, Russian Far East, China, etc.

Current guesses... and these are wild guesses (some from the O Club at his lunch)

1: Crazy Russian or Chinese sub captain. No explosion because they didn't want one, or captain did not have correct codes for the PAL.

2: Islamic.......... ????? Demonstration?????

3: Hoax... but that seems way to far fetched.

Navy is also supposedly bat sh*t over this because there was no acoustic detection of sub!

NORAD scratching head ????

There may be an explanation, but no one knows what it was... or is!

I am afraid that link says “offline for maintenance.” But I have seen pics posted by others of contrails. I have also watched hundreds of real life airplanes leaving contrails both coming and going. That is the one thing that is completely different. Airplanes always eventually pass overhead or past your position leaving a contrail that covers the sky from one side to the other. They never start in one compass point of the sky and end in the same compass point.

The contrail in the video obviously begins west of the coast and moves away further west. An aircraft contrail moving east to west, in either direction, does not fit.

It apparently moves like that. The hypothesis of it being a jet contrail means that the movement and direction are optical phenomena, primarily switching horizontal and vertical real and apparent movement..

I'll post a bit from a site with an explanation, then give the link if you wish more.

The idea that it’s a missile launch comes from three misconceptions. Firstly that the trail is vertical – it’s not, it’s a horizontal trail, at around 32,000 feet (about six miles). It’s the same as this:

This contrail is no more vertical than the road is, and nor are the power lines at 45 degrees. Everything is horizontal – it’s the just the angle you are viewing it from. All of these show horizontal contrails.

Secondly there’s the misconception of direction, that it’s flying away from the viewer, when it’s actually flying towards the viewer. This is because the “base” of the contrail seems wider than the tip. Perspective tells the brain that this mean the base is closer. But actually you can see the base has been greatly spread by the wind. Since it’s still so far away the effects of perspective are greatly diminished, meaning the actual width of the contrail is what is creating the illusion. Imagine is a plane with a 100 mile long spreading contrail were coming towards you; what would it look like? It would look exactly like this.

Thirdly there’s the idea that it goes all the way down to the ground...

Jet contrails.. missile trails.

Nobody in DoD has a clue about a “missile” because it is a regularly scheduled airline flight?!??

Occam's Razor says they're not telling the truth. How many decades have air flights been coming in and out of and crossing over the LA area? How many radar units are in operation there? How closely is air traffic watched by the FAA and the military?

It makes no sense at all that a report of an unknown air craft would not be identified within a few minutes of the first call and would have been known and under surveillance at all times by both civilian and military air control.

In that case why doesn't the contrail continue on and cross overhead and then continue on to the east?

It leaves the contrail-persisting region of air. Here's a contrail calculator that gives the variables involved in whether contrails form or not:

Yes, I’m well aware that not all air conditions propagate contrails. The air conditions over the entire region from LA to Phoenix yesterday were cold enough and humid enough to create them the entire flight path. We just had a front move in to CO last night that extends at least as far south as the Mexican border.

Exactly...we have no idea if it did or didn’t pass directly overhead...none of the video I have seen so far tracks it long enough...I want to see the raw “footage” (bits) fed from the news chopper (beginning to end).

Here is the video which clearly shows it disappearing into the northwestern sky.

With all of the hundreds of witnesses, many who took video, wouldn't one have come forward and said "I saw it pass over the coast and travel to the east?" Instead everyone, including the government, is reporting that it traveled away from the coast.

Just watched the CBS video again...still looks like South to North to me. I have seen nothing from the government saying anything about a direction of travel...as far as I know the government is saying only that it wasn’t a missile (ours or a hostile). I have seen nothing about “witnesses” either...just people that have looked at the edited chopper footage. Are there reports from people “on the beach”? I am still open-minded, but leaning towards Alaska Air Flight #225 or #221.

They should know the exact time of the video to the second (time stamped and transmitted), they should know the altitude and position of the helicopter within a few feet once they know the time, they should know the exact angle / direction of camera because of the ground markers, etc...

If you know one of the object’s position and ground makers are clearly visible. This means they have a perfect position of the Helicopter, exact time, and angle determined by ground markers and flight path. You better be able to determine if a jet was there.

EVERYTHING in the picture is glowing. The bright orange-yellow sunset is making the clouds, the contrail, and yes, the plane glow. No need to have fire.

How do you know it didn't? Just because they don't show it in the video doesn't mean it didn't. I imagine someone continued to tape it but we just haven't seen the end. Most people would think they have already seen enough.

I’m a bit late to the discussion however I do not buy the “airplane contrail” aka swamp gas explanation. The residual colors are the result of a potassium permanganate oxidizer. I base this on both the video and eyewitness reports. The contrail waviness appears to be a result of gyro flight corrections and not wind shear. JMHO.
