It's actually a sunrise launch. The moon is full when the earth is (relatively) on a line between the sun and the moon.
Also, you can tell that it's not the moon's shadow since the shadow extends beyond the moon in the picture.

Lots of speculation in abundance. Here is some more as the issue is intriguing and maybe more than that:
Thinking of the Louisiana Purchase, the Gadsden Purchase, Alaska purchased from Russia: Maybe the US may be propositioned with a hostile takeover offer for certain territories, States via a reverse sale...to China.
Currently California is bankrupt. China wanting to bail out Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, etc with their excess US dollars depreciating rapidly. EU rebuffing the offer. Chinese could think, why not offer to bail out California with strings?? An existential missile threat might make the unthinkable astonishingly, thinkable. History is replete with such black swan events.
WHy not this?...maybe Tom Clancy is working on it as a fiction novel right now...China recently proclaims S. China Sea all the way to Indonesia as its sovereign waters (actually happened a few weeks ago) in a strategic challenge to US. The US responds by hastening the building up of Guam and sending a couple of updated B-52’s there. China fires sub ICBM off Calif coast...a message delivered. In two weeks an offer from China to their friend President Obama,....”we will give you all our $2.5 trillion US dollars, our approx $800B Tbills for California if you also throw in Guam, Hawaii, Taiwan. (China knows US has to print $2.5 trillion a year for the next two years of QE). You are promised protection of very effective Chinese missilery until the end of time. This offer reduces by 10% each day the offer is considered and not acted upon”.
The Chinese recall vividly the rapid response of the Congress to Paulson’s demand by the Fed Reserve thru the US Treasury in 2008 to issue a $700B bailout. Why, with an existential threat, the Congress might act even more quickly than that, especially with an offer that might give the rest of the US an additional year to putz around with impossible insolvency.
China also recalls Adm. Mahan of the 1880s and his case for warring with Spain to get Cuba, the Phillipines, Guam, Hawaii, etc. for expansion in the Pacific to deal with rising samurai Japan.
China would covet gaining US territory for itself as the US had done in the past by war or purchase. Nuclear blackmail is right up its alley. During the Clinton administration a Chinese General threatened the US with nuclear attack on its cities. Nothing more spectacular than a missile at the mouth of L.A. In the last few years, diesel electric subs, one Chinese, one Swedish, have been able to penetrate carrier group defenses.

The Obama administration is not dealing effectively with this missile matter and fictitious speculations are not healthy, including this one. If the demonstration was not of US origin, something big is afoot. One can only speculate.
It is not reassuring when the Obama administration is close to approving the START treaty which will limit US missile defenses. A recent article says only one Sen., a Republican, stands in the way of this treaty. Is the missile launch intended to influence one particular Senator?

No. It’ll be because they used logic in their thinking like many of us here have with the information available. I am SO positive this was a jetliner that I would GLADLY put “I AM AN IDIOT” in my sig if this is proven to be a missile. I wonder if “missile truthers” here are so sure of themselves that they would be willing to do the same if it is proven to be a jetliner.

So why does it seem so big, despite it actually having the same angular width? The brain takes the visual cue of the horizon, trees, buildings, etc. and makes it bigger in your mind; no such visual que's exist high in the sky.
The reason the base of the contrail is wider nearer the horixon is due the the shearing affect of the upper level winds present at FL350 over the course of an hour or two. The part of the contrail nearer the tip is younger, and therefor less affected by winds aloft. Examine upper level rawindsond synopsis w/isotach contours for that time. What is readily apparent? A quite distinct zonal flow N-S from 500mb to 250 mb w/ winds > 50kts. The boundary of this N-S zonal flow is essentially the entire west coast up into Alaska.
Moreover, one has to take into consideration that contrails are effectively pushed down at a rate of 1000' per minute for about 10 minutes (perhaps as long as 15 minutes). This is due to either Newton's 2nd or 3rd Laws. That means the portion of the contrail farthest away is actually at a much lower physical altitude than the youngetst portion of the contrail. The net result is that an increased vertical attitude could become apparent not only due to perspective, but due to distoring affects of atmospheric refraction. But we're not even done yet considering all plausible influencing factors. IF there was a temperature inversion present at any layer of the atmosphere, whether at the surface, or aloft, the normal refracting index of the atmosphere due to extreme oblique illumination would only be exacerbated. Finally, and certainly, not least of all, one should consider the fact of the size of the sun itself relative to the earth.
Ever notice that objects actually can actually cast multiple shadows? Ever wonder why? That's because the sun is so huge and luminous that light emminating specifically from the very limbs of the sun is sufficinetly intense that individual shadows can be cast. So its plausible that three individual shadows can be cast; albeit the two outter ones would be less intense than the main shadow. At twilight all these factors can conspire to create some fairly impressive phenomena. Certainly not the least imnpressive one is a rather rare phenomena known as the Green Flash. Anybody who's ever seen that would swear a nuclear device went off just over the horizon. Not saying that is at play here, but atmoshperic phenomena can be pretty bizarre. Anybody who's witnessed standing lenticular clound phenomena would loudly concur; some pretty spooky stuff there Maynard.
The coup de gras for the missile theory is the shadow. IF it was a vertical missile plume, the shadow would NOT be akin to the pencil type cone being cast, it would be a dark vertical band from top of contrail down to the horizon. The fact that it is not - it is eminating akin to that of a pencil held horizontally against a light source proves the point beyond refute - allows no alternative explanation; i.e., other than an essentially a horizonatal contrail at FL350.
Its obvious there's some serious emotional currency invested in the missile theory. I really wonder why. You know what they say about fads, i.e., any will do. Same with conspiracies. Has the moon-landing hoax ever been resolved? Hell no. Can't even resolve the JFK assasination. We can't stop WikiLeaks, or release of information pertaining to human rights abuses at Abu Graib and Gitmo (not to forget the notorious Pentagon Papers), but this incident rises to the seriousness whereby the US government is clamping down with such pressure that pilots the world over - those who frequent Prune, or Airliners.net - are frightened into silence. Under what penalty? Death? Seriously? The Wikileaker can walk around with impunity (oxygen habit unimpeded)? People who believe this nonsense are seriously delusional to the point of insanity IMHO.

It is exactly this sort of mindless statement that makes missile-hopers sound so ignorant. Local ALTOD traffic is at low altitudes. Persistent contrails only occur at high altitudes where the condensed moisture can freeze into ice crystals (hence the persistence)... (Notice that AWE808 was bound to Phoenix [hence did not descend into the ALTOD low-altitude domain].)
Also notice the local A/C in the video. No contrail. Too low. DUH!!!
You folks need to go back and study jr. high physics and optics...

Can somebody tell me what sort of missile, or even extrapolation of a missile, has a *primary boost phase* that lasts for 10 minutes or more?

Sure, I will explain, although I have explained two times before.
As you can see in the short video excerpt, the missile is racing up into the sky, heading north by north-west.
The video of the rocket in flight was taken until it gets smaller and smaller and then disappears -— this part is under UNDER 2 minutes long -— “That thing was really going fast” said the LAX webcam operators.
The remaining 8 minutes of film are of the smoke plume remaining, lingering, in the sky:
The cameraman took 8 minutes of the missile exhaust because what he had just finished seeing was so unique and dramatic and strange, and the plume was so strange — “Never seen anything like it before” —that he continued taking film even after the missile had disappeared.
The blog idea of “a 10 minute video of a missile launch” is a “garble” of what really happened and what was said by the cameraman. No one would be so foolish as to say that they filmed a missile rising in the sky for 10 minutes -— only that the whole tape, including a lot of footage of the bizarre and odd and strange smoke plume, was that long.
You can see for yourself that the “object” is moving fast.
You can see for yourself the red fire coming out of the base of the object.
You can see for yourself that the object, like the many other missile launches that I have seen and that many other FReepers have seen, that the object rises up and arcs out further over the ocean and gets smaller and finally disappears from sight.
Seriously everyone, how many huge experts do you need to hear from?
It is good to know that bloggers sitting at home looking at a few seconds of a partial video clip can come up with much better opinions than the experts that I have posted.
Insulting Gen McInerney seems a very foolish thing to do: have you seen his Wiki entry listing his very long and illustrious career and his service to our country?
He is 100% sure he saw a SLBM launch, as am I (for what little that is worth).

What experience do these weird “contrail” people have to offer??? What expertise? How many hours in fighter jets or submarines or actually there, working at missile launches??? None, I bet.
It is not a thin vapor condensation trail in the sky above our heads.
It is thick, heavy rocket corkscrew exhaust plume (as Jane’s missile expert pointed out to the Times of London the first day), and it is a missile.
Thousands of planes pass near and over LAX every day. No one has ever seen anything like this before.
And that is because nothing like it has ever happened before.
This SLBM launch should be the #1 topic across America, as I believe we have just been shown China’s new power -— Thanks, Bill Clinton !!!
