Drop that bishop and come out with your hands up!
A squad of cops in bulletproof vests swooped into an upper Manhattan park and charged seven men with the "crime" of playing chess in an area off-limits to adults unaccompanied by kids -- even though no youngsters were there.
"Is chess really something that should be considered a threat to the neighborhood?" Inwood resident and mom Joanne Johnson wrote Mayor Bloomberg, the City Council and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly after the raid.
"This incident is an embarrassment to the officers from the 34th Precinct who felt that it was necessary to use their badge and authority to issue such a random summons."

I need to read Rand.

From the article:

“parents have welcomed him and the other players — and even had their kids take chess lessons from them.”
Come on people, we get a bit too hysterical here at times.
If any of these chess playing men had a record the cops would have sure let us know about it.
And I repeat - Gangs of Pedophiles I have never heard about. It is a non-sequitur
“When playing chess is outlawed, only outlaws will play chess.”
I like that. Clever
Truth is, I find the whole concept of an area just for kids and parents crazy. It suggests a false sense of security for parents. After all you never know who might be playing chess.
Parents should be with their kids all the time in parks and recreation areas. I play ball with my son instead of just sitting on a bench and watching him wander about.
That’s because you can’t read.
There are way too mnay cops getting paid way too much with nothing to do.
“Life on the line” my #$%%%.
Since you have interjected here, please post the sentence where the many mom's supported the guys. Thanks.
Mighty convenient excerpting skills noted.

Go ahead and cower in fear of chess players.
Did you see the paintings this guy did? See #11 and #12 above. The guy is weird.
"If the tables are there to play chess, that's what they should be allowed to do."
I find it strange that a 46 year old paints like this and spends his time in the childrens section of the park.
I enjoyed your hypothesis but it could also have been many other combinations including one playing six!
As for a conspiracy, after yesterdays “terrorist’s” trial, there is no such thing as conspiracy in New York. Also no guns in “gun free” New York. :^)
“Ive never heard of a GANG of pedophiles congregating anywhere. By nature and definition it would have to be a solitary, secretive, and disgusting pursuit.”
they have unionized to lobby for their collective right to be recognized as a protected minority, claiming victimhood status due to discrimination against their illness.
It’s pathetic that our society has gotten to this point where men playing chess on chess tables set up by the park authority is even questioned, much less cause for a raid and arrest.
When I was a kid growing up in NYC, our local park had tables like that where the old men (from a kid’s perspective) played chess, checkers, or cards alongside the kids on swings and seesaws. No problem. Our mothers even let us go to the park alone. Of course, when I was a kid growing up in NYC, it was ok for parents to let their kids ride the subway alone, without an armed guard. What has happened?
Seven guys were sitting around plotting to capture the King.
That’s a fact they have admitted to, and can’t be ignored.
King Bloomburg couldn’t take the risk that it was just chess.
Better safe than sorry.
Arrest the plotters!
That odd man is the ring leader of the plot.
Search their homes. Bet they all own a salt shaker.
Capture the King or mate, that is the question1
Mate , Hell no!
I myself think they were planning on overtaking the Queens and holding it for a ransom. The cops in this scenario are the pawns. Just following orders.
You are right about the as-salt shakers! They could possibly be converted to Full-Auto.
:^)

Have a great Day!
This guy also runs a blog called "banana dreams". On his blog he has this video of a transvestite simulating oral sex on a banana.
here is another of his banana artworks:
Just playing chess around the kiddies, nothing to worry about folks.
