WASHINGTON – Republicans in the House have blocked a bill that would have extended jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed beyond the holiday season.
The most recent extension of jobless benefits expires Dec. 1. Two million people will lose benefits averaging $310 a week nationwide by the end of the year.

For what it's worth, I first saw this on PBS’s Nightly Business Report with Suzanne Pratt and Tom Hudson, and it was reported simply as the extension being denied. Only by Congress, no political party was mentioned and no blame/credit was given.
But the measure was set forth to Congress as a "Fast Track Bill which necessitates a 2/3 vote. The Pelosi Democrat led House set it up to fail. It's a Machiavellian strategy that Pelosi is so adept, so practiced.Remember the media talk/headlines of the last three weeks...'Republicans won'...'Republicans swept the elections nationwide'...Tea Party Republicans surprise the nation!!! We must remember a vast USA populace thinks the Repubicans are NOW in control of the HOUSE (ignorant of the fact that House Republicans just assume control in Janaury 2011).
The Obama entitlement voter will naturally blame the Republicans as not for the poor people...just for the rich.
As in the past two decades...the Republicans just do not have an adequate message nor messenger.
I guess I am a lazy bum too! I have applied for about 250 positions, landed about 8 interviews and have been a finalist 3 times. My reviews were nothing short of extraordinary at my prior job, yet I cannot get a position. People who think it is easy to get a job in this environment are living in an alternate universe.....no other way of explaining it.
I talked with a recruiter today about a position I might get an interview for.....she said she has never seen it so bad.....but what does she know? All of those people are lazy bums......I read it here.
The republicans don’t mind the extension; they just want it paid for with stimulus funds... They still lack the gumption to say NO MORE.
USALiberty is a good example of the dangers of being exposed to lead paint, which often results in brain rot. I realize you paid into FICA. Your boss also paid into Employer Matching. He didn’t get a tax return. On average, we would all have been better off if Social-ist Security never existed. More money to invest. Private insurance for contingencies.

Did I say that? I’m just pointing out that people hide behind their families saying that they absolutely must have extended unemployment. Oh? There is NOTHING they can do? There are options. I found work in fast food and could have run my own restaurant if I wanted it badly enough.

I hear you. Will it get rough? Darn straight. People will need to rent out their homes and move in with family. They are going to have to make some hard choices. And while 18 year olds are complaining about no work, the US is recruiting foreigners to serve in the military. I guess those kids think they’re too good for that.
Unemployment is being covered by more debt. China just bought 17% of GM with our debt repayments. Greece ended up selling some of its islands to cover socialist programs. The European Union is in collapse. People are rioting in France, England, and Greece. Heck I bet they’re rioting in other countries. Who is going to keep loaning the US money?
The economy gets moving again when people start working again. That will increase revenue for the government too. The answer is not more unemployment. That’s the worst choice.

we might have the same relative! my nephew has been doing this for years... his wife works... he stays home with the kids and collects unemployment... his wife went to work 2 weeks after delivering their second baby... and she had a c-section!
I can’t believe I’m being cussed out by a freeper who wants an unemployement EXTENSION. For crying out loud — how long does it last now? Mark Stein pointed out that no nation on earth has unemployment benefits that last as long as the US. I could understand a leftist bedwetter being dissatisfied with the most padded unemployment system on earth, but a freeper?

you lack grace... it's not easy to get a job at McDonald's these days... and because of the poor economy, people are raking their own leaves and mowing their own lawns... sometimes people go through tough times "legitimately..." let him voice his frustrations... he doesn't need to hear your judgment of him... he's applied to 200 jobs... i'm sure some of those must have been to places like Taco Bell and Home Depot... you don't have to wish him extended unemployment benefits, but you don't have to be so cruel about it...

Doing away with unemployment benefits will probably take away another half a percentage point or so from “growth”. I am not crying about it, as I am relatively prepared, but honestly cannot believe how some do not realize how bad it is if the “last legs” so to speak and kicked out, and people are now forced onto welfare.
Unemployment benefits are not a great option, but the ideas of many here are far worse (at least for the economy).
People have already cut back on spending. If workers now think there is no safety net for them should they lose their jobs, they will cut back even more, thus hurting the economy and the national psyche. Bank on it.

Fear is, sadly, an important motivator for any economy to function. No economy on earth has ever worked without fear. “If you do not work, you do not eat.”
That’s why Solomon spoke of putting fear in lazy fools, beating them with sticks, etc. Jesus also said there would always be the poor. I take that to mean that fear of poverty must always be a motivating factor.
If anyone wants a job in fast food, I’ll tell them how. But they better be willing to work their seseme seed buns off!

That’s not what they are doing though. Many here want the GOP to cut benefits because you thin the unemployed are lazy. That’s not why they want the benefits cut.
The GOP is saying they will vote to extend the benefits if there is a way to pay for them without tacking it on to the national debt.
Telling voters they are lazy in the middle of an economic downturn is a great way to lose elections and appear completely out of touch with the country.

Okay....but what about a situation where you are actually earning more on unemployment than you would be working? What would you tell people who have no other source of income to do? This is sometimes the case if the fulltime job you lost was relatively lucrative. (Over 40k annually)
