Summit endorses expunging blacks' criminal records

GARY | Black males have higher rates of incarceration and of repeat offenses that land them back in jail or prison, statistics show.

Changing that dynamic could begin with expunging their criminal records.

That was the consensus of a discussion Thursday sponsored by the Gary Commission on the Social Status of Black Males in conjunction with the East Chicago-based group Working Outside the Walls and an alliance of grassroot activists.

The panel discussion brought together activists, religious leaders, law enforcement officers and area legislators to talk about a possible Expungement Summit in Northwest Indiana. Expunging the criminal records of juveniles and adults would help them find jobs and turn their lives around, said Bennie Muhammed, GCSSBM executive director.

I see. If you’re black, you get a pass.

So much for equal protection under the law. Now it’s dead, too.

Man, they really do want massive civil unrest so they can lower the hammer, don’t they?

I am posting this to the forum for your comments, because I, for one, am speechless at this incredible abuse of the legal system and the threat it poses to society, should it become ubiquitous.

Sounds like a stupid idea. It violates equal protection by giving criminals of a specified race a pass on responsibility for their criminal acts. You do the crime, you do the time. The legal system is stuck on stupid of late.

Typical failed liberalism. Never addresses the source of the problem.

Maybe they can "expunge" this speeding ticket I got last week while they're at it.

Oh, if this ever gets off the ground there WILL be equal protection lawsuits by whites and other nonblacks.

Has this been tried elsewhere in the world and how well (or poorly) has it turned out?

What a great idea just think a rapist could have his record exponged and then go to work as an orderly in a hospital!*sarcasm*

It appears this initiative has less to do with "giving blacks a second chance" and more to do with the lack of money available to lock up repeat offenders.

Just wipe the slate clean and hope for the best.

There's going to be a lot of this happening around the country as budgets dry up. Stay armed and keep your head on a swivel! There's a lot of bad guys running loose.

Changing that dynamic could begin with expunging their criminal records.

I got a better idea for "changing the dynamic." Stop committing crimes.

A big part of the problem is that it seems to be cool in the black community to be a social loser. A sort of passive aggressive payback to Whitey for long ago slavery and Jim Crow. If you lionize typical rap, you shouldn’t complain about what it inspires.

Well somebody already successfully expunged our elected Pharaoh’s records. No surprise it would be considered as means and methods to make common.

Whites are the largest group. One would think whites would fix things in their favor. Or at least actively secure fairness. I hear them say tough stuff and all. Huh.

This might be more about petty thefts, petty vandalism, littering, pot smoking, and that sort of thing.

Lower what hammer? If that point in time ever comes, I’ll bet that the military is pointing their weapons in the direction of the WH.

If this doesn’t work to improve their self-image, I suppose the next step of affirmative action would be to put their criminal records onto whites.

Why you could just pick whites out of the population at random to make it fair(er)and put a criminal record on them, assessing each so many juvie busts, a few minor misdemeanors and then some heavy felonies.

Just look at what that would do to the job market, college applications, and applications to country clubs.
