Palin needs a history lesson (Richard Cohen flips out)

Palin needs a history lesson
RICHARD COHEN
Tuesday, November 23, 2010

When I was 11, my father thought it was time to show my sister and me the nation's capital.

**SNIP**

It's appalling that Palin and too many others fail to understand that fact - indeed so many facts of American history. They don't offer the slightest hint that they can appreciate the history of the Obama family and that in Michelle's case, her ancestors were slaves - Jim Robinson of South Carolina, her paternal great-great grandfather, being one. Even after they were freed they were consigned to peonage, second-class citizens, forbidden to vote in much of the South, dissuaded from doing so in some of the North, relegated to separate schools, restaurants, churches, hotels, waiting rooms of train stations, the back of the bus, the other side of the tracks, the mortuary, the cemetery and, if whites could manage it, heaven itself.

It was the government that oppressed blacks, enforcing the laws that imprisoned them and hanged them for crimes grave and trivial, whipped them if they bolted for freedom and, in the Civil War, massacred them if they were captured fighting for the North. And yet if African Americans hesitate in embracing the mythical wonderfulness of America, they are accused of racism - of having the gall to know more about their own experience and history than Palin and others think they should.

Why do politicians such as Palin and commentators such as Glenn Beck insist that African Americans go blank on their own history - as blank as apparently Palin and Beck are themselves?

Sarah Palin teases that she might run for president. But she is unqualified - not just in the (let me count the) usual ways, but because she does not know the country. She could not be the president of black America nor of Hispanic America.

He must be drinking some of Joe Biden's Iraq Kool-Aid and be pushing for a "3-state solution" to divide up the USA into separate nations.

How can Barack Obama represent female America? Oh wait, he grew up abroad...

Obama did not set foot on to mainland USA until he was 17, spent a lot of time abroad, and yet he is qualified and knows the country?

If they were driving to Washington, they slowed down and stopped where the sign said "colored" - and the irritated Palins of the time angrily hit the horn and went on their way.

Maybe Sarah should have asked Al Gore about his black maid who used to ride along with the family (and wait in the car while the family dined in white only establishments).

If anything smacks of racism and power trips, it is that sort of thing. I've never even known anyone with a maid or housekeeper.

Yes because he was raised a true red diaper doper baby by mama and Frank Marshall Davis and Granmama. They taught him all about the evils of this nation.

Exactly! Michelle has a “half empty” mentality that will keep her a bitter, hateful person. If she really thought about it she would just be relieved that no matter what happened before she is here now. Had her family remained in Africa, her life would be very different. So stop complaining and be grateful that all the suffering her ancestors went through has given their children and her children a much better life.

Clinging (bitterly?) to victimhood status and the idea of " ... the mythical wonderfulness of America, ..." indicates to me an incapacity to be rational about history on the very face of this polemical screed. If you choose to focus completely upon all of the worst treatment doled out to an entire population over the span of the century-plus post-Civil War without ANY redemptive action is lying about history.

True. Old Communist revisionist history trick. There are some ugly elements in our nation's history. Communists cling to them and berate those who had no ties to that history. Also, there is no comparison to how things were elsewhere in the world at the same time (or are even to this day).

If America was such a rotten place and so hard for a black man to get ahead, why did Barack's daddy come here from Kenya and seek a higher education?

The more the Left seeks to deny America's greatness, the more Americans get p***ed off at their ti-RED arguments.

Probably because, beyond family table-talk, it's completely irrelevant to anything.

But I think it'll be fun when they find out that Obama's great-great[...] grandfather is the one who sold Michelle's great-great[...] grandfather into slavery.

I’ve heard it said that Muhammed Ali realized how much better off he was living in America after he went to Africa.

Well, we could look at the men who were drafted and sent off to fight WWI and WWII on foreign shores as slaves, too.

My gosh, America is the most horrible place on earth!

It’s hardly possible that she is not knowledgeable about the history of African Americans - no Ellis Island for them, immigrants in their colorful native dress waving at the camera.

I hate to tell Michelle that there was no Ellis Island until 1892. Most of us had no Ellis Island, Michelle. I know my family didn’t. They did spend a whole lot of time in Stalin’s Gulags. I bet I don’t get reparations for that!

My ancestors had no slaves ever, so who gives a rats arse!

The entertaining part of this is that Barry Obama's ancestors probably did, on both his mother's and father's side.

Those who hate this nation, loathe the idea of American exceptionalism. I beg them to show me which nation is better, in their eyes. And we are going to go back 450 years in history and tally the failures.

I think when you have to use more then one “GREAT” it's time to put it in the past.

of having the gall to know more about their own experience and history than Palin and others think they should.

Here I thought that Michelle grew up in a middle class Chicago neighborhood and then went to an elite Ivy League school. I didn't know her 'experience' included slavery.

Instead of celebrating what the woman accomplished as an individual, Cohen just puts her in a box with millions of others who likely have little in common with her experience.

Typical leftist blather. There is no such thing as an individual -- only groups. For all it's warts and past sins, the American experience has been about individuals and what individuals accomplish. That is why the left hates America. You can't micro manage and control hundreds of millions of individuals. They would put us all in little group boxes and control what the boxes can do, say and think -- while of course they get to play God with our lives.

I hate the left.

“The ‘Obama family’ does not HAVE a history in America.”
Well if you don’t count jumping off a plane, impregnating
a white teenager in Hawaii, abandoning her, jumping back
on a plane going to Harvard, impregnating another white
chick, dragging her back to a mud brick house in Kenya,
dumping her, and getting two more black chicks pregnant.
Dying in a car accident while besotted on imported scotch. Now that is a history one can be proud of.

He’s not got simple White Guilt...

He’s got an Old Testament White Guilt!

“The LORD is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.”
