50 billion in market distortion( higher food, grain prices)
50??? billion is destroyed engines, carborators, repairs, lawn mowers, older fiberglassed in boat fuel tanks, aircraft engines, boat engines.
So, say 150-200 billion in direct and indirect costs.

Where did you get your number for direct subsidies? One of the comments below the article gives 7.7 billion. I have no opinion, except that it’s surely more than $1 billion.

it was a calculated fraud on his behalf in order to gain political power.
I’d assume that Leisler is referring to cumulative subsidies over a decade whereas the article is referring one current-year subsidies??

You need to get your pencil back out. There were/are no direct subsidies for ethanol fuel. The govt. simply didn’t tax it. Thats like calling the Bush tax cuts government spending. I am not buying into the govt. owns the world unless they decide they don’t theory.
And if you think about the benefit all along from the abundant and ergo cheaper ancillary products from the corn milling operations, you have it completely opposite on higher food prices. Take ethanol out of the mix now and see what happens to food prices. It wont be pretty - corn syrup, lysine, citric acic, gluten, corn oil, etc.

What a creepy human being. Who else has had the temerity to shout, “He played on our fears,” in reference to GWB, and then foist such fear inducing crap on the world.
It wasn’t just algore, it was Bob Dole, and Grassley and a host of corn state morons. Exporting our fantastic crop surplus would not pay as much as a goldman sachs ethanol futures market, which should ring a lot of bells when you think about the carbon credits exchange which has folded but is coming back with this “im sorry” gambit from moron gore.
Al is upset because the hispano DREAM act constituency is seeing a huge rise in the price of corn tacos.
What irks so many is that ethanol is NOT a clean burning fuel at all, in addition to all of the above and the subsidies and the damage to engines and all the rest.

Riiight, no direct subsidies, sure, but plenty in between and special tax code write ups.
There is an ethanol commodities market, no? And corn futures. Explain how this decision, which is demonstrably causing havoc in the small engine field as well as in automobiles that are paid for, is a good one? My equipment replacement costs have doubled due to corrosive effects of ethanol.
Was this not another creation of Goldman Sachs, like carbon credits, like derivatives exchange like a hundred other areas of so called “investment”.
And now, the ethanol lobby wants MORE ethanol required to be added to gas. So they can make more money for a specific block of growers and futures traders. We do export ethanol, you know. Imagine that.
It takes petrochemicals to feed the corn to grow to make the ethanol. We have to import the crude to make the fertilizer, and all the “no till” in the world can’t make up for that. And then we export the ethanol, but not enough, so now we need to have more required in our own gasoline, to help the “flex fuel” cartel. Is it any surprise that Soros is so heavy in Monsanto and genetic mod seed industry?
It is not energy independence that was sought by Dole, Grassley and others- it was serious cash and their cartel of political hacks, along with mr. enviro liar gore.
I understand quite well the corn syrup, lysine,etc. derivative products. Ethanol is not a clean burning fuel on top of all this. The whole thing needs to be rolled up. If we’re gonna make ethanol, at least let it be Jack Daniels and stop pouring it in our gas tanks.
I’d be willing to accept the cumulative value of them. But where are those numbers from?
And affected the standard of living of poor people who saw food costs rise.
