Wikileaks - Obama traded anti missile shield for Russian support
Polskie Radio ^ | November 29, 2010

President Obama cancelled anti-missile shield plans in Poland and the Czech Republic to get Russia support for UN sanctions against Iran, documents made public by Wikileaks reveal.

(snip)

The whistle blowing web site, publishing diplomatic cables and other documents via The New York Times, the Guardian (UK) and other media outlets, show that George Bush’s anti-missile shield plan to station 10 interceptor rockets in Poland not far from the Kaliningrad (Russia) border and a radar system in the Czech Republic was seen as an obstacle by Washington in getting tougher sanctions against Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Indeed it was, but now the proof is out rendering it more than conjecture.

Or maybe traded them for payoffs to his political supporters like G.E. http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKLH50324420090917

Really, it would be hard for the Russians to play him for anything else. This is the first directly damaging bit I’ve seen for Barry, though that tradeoff was the rumor at the time anyway.

Compare him to Chamberlain? If Obama was in FDR’s place in 38-39 you would need a German English dictionary to translate this.

This dangerous dolt should not be allowed to make deals with anyone....especially not the far more intelligent Russians and Chinese. Keep him on the basketball court, where he feels superior, in spite of the 12 stitches in his motor mouth.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe it was ever revealed that there was an actual deal or trade with Russia.

http://www.wbj.pl/article-52275-wikileaks-paints-colorful-picture-of-us-foreign-policy.html?typ=wbj

During an April 2009 meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed concern that the missile shield would “[disrupt] the balance between the US and Russia’s nuclear potential.” He also stated that the US and Russia should work together on missile defense, but should start over “from scratch.”

“In a follow-on meeting, [Deputy Foreign Minister] Sergey Ryabkov stressed that while Russia was interested in working with the US on [missile defense (MD)], it would be difficult for Russia to join a U.S. MD effort that included sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, and urged that if the U.S. intended to pursue sites in Europe, they should be further west and south, so as to diminish the effect on Russian capabilities,” the leaked communiqué states.

I wonder how much more nothing we’re going to get for ratifying the START Treaty.

There is precedent for the State Department having misrepresented the consequences of a treaty to the Senate, in writing. This could be a lot worse than the Senate could understand with but few exceptions.

When President Barack Obama took office, he unveiled a new policy of engagement with Iran, offering to talk with its leaders.

But at a meeting in Europe, an American envoy said “engagement alone is unlikely to succeed” and that the Obama administration was planning to surround Iran with economic sanctions and missile defenses.

To get China - which depends heavily on Iran for oil - to go along with sanctions, the U.S. apparently persuaded Saudi Arabia’s king to guarantee China it would make up any oil it lost from Iran. After Mr. Obama cancelled plans to station anti-missile defenses in Poland — defenses which Russia believed were directed against it - and place them on ships in the Mediterranean instead, Russia “indicated (its) willingness to move to the pressure track” - support sanctions, in other words.

“Some of these trades are embarrassing, some of them reveal deep interests that countries have and reveal things never intended to be public,” Zarate said.

IOW dump SDI completely or design it such that the Russians could render it inoperative. My take is that START is all about undoing what Reagan accomplished and returning us to MAD.

Quid pro quo from reading the lines on how Russia was to "grease" the Obama Admin. (And CNN was just one source of many at that time).

But it is nice to see exposure again, hopefully more people will "catch" on the "idiocracy" of the Obama regime.

I thought this was announced on FR years ago.

You're right. Nothing new.

“Stupid. The Russians played him for a fool.”

And I’m sure that all the while he thought he was being oh so smart. It’s so predictable based on his background - a sophomoric and pathetically simplistic world view that never progressed beyond the pablum one gets in college, no real job after that, narcissism, and a basal misunderstanding of and distaste for America. When mixed together these ingredients pretty much told you what his administration would be like.

It may have been announced on FR, but if President Obama did it, it was either this year or last year. Hard for me to believe but this nimrod hasn’t even been in office two years yet.
