FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Nov. 8, 2010) — A major fire on training ranges at Fort Leonard Wood forced Army firefighters to call for assistance from heavy equipment operated by the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, as well as mutual aid from the Saint Robert Fire Department. About 600 acres have burned so far, according to post officials; the cause of the fire has not yet been announced. “Earlier last week there have been a number of small fires out on the ranges and on Sunday this larger fire had been discovered,” said post spokesman Jeff Maddy. “That’s when they called for additional resources.”

Training Range fires on FLW are very common. They usually occur in the early Spring about Easter. They rarely cause any problems as they never get past the Post’s boundaries.
This one is a little larger than they normally grow to.

Ah yes, took my basic training there. In July and August, 1960. 110 in the shade. 12-mile forced marches with full backpack and a 9-lb. Garand rifle. 3/4-tons following behind into which they threw everyone who passed out (I didn’t; I lasted the whole way). Swapping stories about signs erected in Korea which read, “If you think THIS is hell, just wait ‘til you get to FLW, MO!”

When I was in the Nat. Grd. they often refered to FLW as Little Korea.
