Camden will lay off nearly half of its police officers and a third of its firefighters while eliminating positions in every city office, according to a layoff plan approved Tuesday by the state.
The 383 total layoffs represent about a quarter of the city's work force, and touch all corners of city government, from 15 positions in the municipal court to 20 police dispatchers.

Yes, we have lots of firemen, and also lots of volunteer firemen, as well as men who would step up in an emergency to do what’s right when it counts. What we don’t need is more Northerners escaping down here and bringing with them their failed voting patterns.
If the populace arms itself, they can do a damned sight better job than the police. This is Camden, after all.

You are letting a sob story about a person (who happens to be a kid) getting killed affect your wisdom about how effective government in general is.
Government really sucks at these things, no matter how many child victims you dig up, and no matter how bad your punctuation is.

Camden has been dying a slow death since 1950 when RCA pulled up stakes and left the Delaware Valley to avoid the CIA thuggery. I’ve told you about that and how my grandfather was elected the first president of the Machinists and electrical workers at RCA and how the union bosses were unhappy with the election and tried to have my grandfather moved into management. My grandfather turned down the promotion because he liked his job and wanted to be the union president. A few months later, he and my grandmother were run down by a hit and run driver as they stood on the curb in front of their house.
Later that year RCA announced that they were closing the plant. That was the beginning of the end for Camden and it was all the result of the CIO(A). It was the CIOA before it merged with the AFL.
In the late 1880 into the early 20th centruy, Newark, Camden, the cities of that part of New Jersey were known world wide as modern, wealthy, fantastic cities that were the new model of cities and wealth creation. Close to financial centers, ports, labor, land and farms. Business sprang up to make and export everything world wide.
But, the taxes, unions, government grew to consume the wealth. Marginal buisnesss, taxed, shook down into non-profit status, left, leaving fewer and fewer, but larger, buisness to have the tax burdens dumped on them , and as you pointed out, be the target of unions. Really, by then the cities were in their Indian Summer( September ) before their financial winter. In short, they were dead men walking.
Since the 60’s the cities have been welfare society cities and those that tend, or feast of the now dead carcass of once living cities. These would be the teachers unions of schools that don’t educated, police/security bureaucracy of cops, jails, lawyers of both sides that don’t have any effect on crime.
Even the police department is a dead. Keeping the older, slower, desk bound, near pensioned cops and cashing the young, cheaper street cops.
Anyways, we should of never had police at all in this country. We used to, and still do in physically most of the country have sheriffs. It is the duty of a free person to protect his own property and life. I can’t see any conservative advocating that a person should have his money taken by force, to subsidize his protection by the police which are in truth the welfare agency for crime/criminals.
From even south of New Jersey, up the coast to Maine, and that same distance west to Chicago are HUNDREDS of Camden like cites. Nothing but taxes, hacks and welfare and a few buisness creeping along like scared rabbits.
I don’t see why this shouldn’t be the soon to be fate of entire states, like Michigan, New York, California, Ohio. All the forces are there, that existed in the cities. Fleeing wealth producers, legions of tax eating employees, welfare, debts.
Working fire alarms and sprinklers are far more effective at saving lives than firemen. Rather than having pensioned unionized firemen making 6 figures saving half a house from fire damage by giving it massive water damage it would be far cheaper for a city to let the occasional house burn completely down and cut the owners a check.

99.5% of fire death prevention is due to smoke alarms. Cheap and effective.
Sprinklers are expensive and only 0.5% of prevented fire deaths are due to sprinklers.
Insurance companies and their government lackeys are pushing sprinklers because they prevent property damage, which saves insurance companies money.
In Josephine County, Oregon we had a budget crisis a couple of years ago and the Sheriff’s Department was going to take about a 20-30% cut.
Now Oregon is a shall-issue state and the the people who weren’t wringing their hands in worry just went down and got their permits renewed before the Sheriff ran out of manpower to issue them.
Somehow we survived just fine.
NJ is about as gun-unfriendly a place as exists in the US, and this could be a bigger deal there.
