McCain: 'Don't Ask' Repeal May Cause Troop Exodus

WASHINGTON (Dec. 2) -- Senate Republicans, led by Arizona's John McCain, today raised the specter of a mass exodus of offended troops if gays are allowed to serve openly in the military.

In a preview of a debate McCain hopes to keep from reaching the Senate floor for a vote this month, opponents vehemently rejected a 10-month Pentagon study that found there would be minimal disruption in the ranks if Congress repealed the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

At a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee, they told Pentagon leaders they did not take seriously enough resistance from Army and Marine Corps combat and special-operations units. They also questioned whether the Pentagon survey of 115,000 troops was large enough to be representative.

McCain urged against a "rush to repeal." Citing "alarming" statistics in the report, he predicted as many as 265,000 service members, or 12 percent of the military, would leave the service if the policy were changed. And he asked why the 103-question survey of troops did not ask directly whether the policy should be repealed.

“I couldn’t disagree more,” McCain growled. “We send these young people into combat, we think they’re mature enough to fight and die. I think they’re mature enough to make a judgment on who they want to serve with and the impact on their battle effectiveness.”

No bias i this damn article. McCain “growled”? He likely got damn stern.

It’s also important to note (and he did) that of 400,000 surveys sent out, “only” 115,000, or 28 percent, were returned. Hardly, a good sampling.

Yes, and what better way to demoralize our Military and weaken it. Of course, the answer to the problem of an exodus and/or low sign up is precisely what the Demrats have wanted all along. The Draft, of course.

Yes, and and who counted the returns. The same folks who counted their Election vote? This is just amazing. . .and the spin of the Agenda goes on and on. Am glad, at least, that McCain is hot on this one.

No Repub should EVER trust or even pretend to trust, these people of the lie. Way past time to call them on their ever duplicitous MO's. Truth is simply alien to them. And caring about America; even more foreign.

“...and even as sexual assault of female service members continues today, “These social changes in the military have not been easy.””

A previous thread about the high rate of female veteran suicide compared to civilians shows how well things are going on that front. (And sexual assaults are bi)

The problem with comparing America with other nations is that although we are becoming more pagan, there is a higher percentage of conservatives who enlist. Which is why their home towns didn’t mail out their voting ballots.

Also, although there was a high number of surveys returned, who did the survey, and who counted them? (I don’t trust anyone.)

In Israel everyone has to serve for the nation to survive, so they should not be used as an example.
