Really? The Feds jumped in and stopped a state-jurisdictioned civil proceeding?

WHOA!

Madoff’s Eldest Son Found Dead in Suicide

Suicide? I wonder if he even had a choice in the matter.

Madoff’s Eldest Son Found Dead in Suicide

Maybe this occurred because the son was complicit in Bernie’s crimes.
Or felt shame and guilt over what his father did.

Too bad we’ll never get his testimony in court cases.

That woke me up too. But then I thought about how the Feds took over GM and blew the investors off. Made me remembered we are living in a brave new era where the government reigns supreme.

You're absolutely right. However, he did not plead guilty in exchange for a lenient sentence - since he has been walking around free for two years.

I heard that on the news. I cannot imagine why he would do it with the child in the apartment.

He couldn't afford a baby sitter.

There are far too many cases of white-collar crime where the family gets to keep part or all of the ill-gotten gains and the victims get nothing. The authorities seem to take more mercy on the criminal family then the victims.
I don’t care if they really know nothing..the earnings and wealth of a scam artist are all tainted and should be confiscated down to the last ear ring.

The investigation is ongoing. Who knows what Mark Madoff knew or expected would happen to him in the coming months or years. He may have seen himself going to prison eventually and just been unable to face that prospect.

[the younger Madoff, 46, hanging fully clothed from a black dog leash attached to a pipe in the apartment ceiling.

His 2-year-old son was sleeping in a nearby bedroom and was unharmed, as was their labradoodle.]

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think the labradoodle has some explaining to do.

I’m of two minds on this. We know that he did scam a lot of people, but his track record was well known and it was an impossible performance level. Many of his investors knew this and it was apparently common knowledge on the street.

So, yes he scammed a large number of people, but many of them knew that they were throwing in with a questionable money manager.

So are you implying that perhaps Madoff’s death was the result of foul play or pressure due to people threatening his life?

Even if you aren’t, it is an angle to think about here. A lot of people lost a lot of money by Madoff. I wouldn’t put it past them to make life miserable for some of the family.

His wife was in Florida with their 4 year old and he was in New York with the two year old.

Begging your pardon, but I do not think that is an overstatement. There are many people who lost millions of dollars with Bernie, some of whose lives were indeed shattered. My sister in Florida does know a family who were multimillionaires; three generations who owned several businesses in NYC. They were honest people who made it big. They lost, essentially, everything and had to now start from the beginning and go back to work. They sold their houses, etc.

Yes...they were stupid (and arguably greedy seeing Bernie's phony numbers), but they did nothing illegal and lost the family fortune. They might have been the extreme, but plenty of people and institutions lost billions. Click here for the list.

Oh, absolutely.

For one, the auditors should never see the light of day. And some of his cronies.

And the SEC is ultimately guilty as well. Having gone through dozens and dozens of regulatory audits, they are tenacious, and go through all of your books and trade tickets.

They looked the other way with Bernie.

Why is it that certain people whose death would be convenient for dems/libs are always described immediately as having committed suicide? I’m not saying it isn’t suicide, but how come they are so sure right away?
