The Library of Congress announced last week that it has made a huge collection of Civil War portraits available on its Flickr site. The portraits almost 700 of them are available at http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/sets/72157625520211184.
This collection is all from one place the Liljenquist family and includes the frames of the pictures as well as the ambrotype and tintype photographs themselves. Many of the pictures are soldiers (including some portraits of African-American soldiers) but there are some civilian pictures here as well. There are also many group pictures, both of civilians and soldiers.
Some of the pictures are fairly dark and hard to see or maybe its my monitor. If you want more detailed images than are available at Flickr, you can go back to LOC.gov and download archival-quality TIFFs, though they are a slow download. I downloaded one of 84MB and one of 116MB.
A remarkable collection, but also depressing in a way
the soldiers all look so young

Thank you for the ping.
TIFF files are huge - suitable for research I suppose. Maybe folks here have a lead on the names or stories in these portraits.
I’m very fortunate to have a tinplate of a relative of mine from the era. He was PA volunteer who was the only member of his unit kia on America’s bloodiest day.

I just went through some of the other images in their catalog. I wonder who is doing their scanning, because it is horrible.
Is this an intern job or something? Their FSA (some of the most iconic photos of their day) photos are scanned so horribly as to be almost useless. I hope these are NOT the things they are using to archive these great works.
We spend so much money on stuff that doesnt matter, I wish they could spend a few bucks to get this correct.
The Civil War soldier TIFF is 150mb. Sure, it is large, but large enough to actually crop out the frame and get a decent resolution picture to work with.
The Dorthea Lange, Migrant Farm Mother is 1.5 MB and, it is out of focus.
What a shame.

Most of the photos of small children had the children holding a mini US flag. We don’t do that any longer, do we?
Excellent, thanks for passing this along.
