NOW goes after Hooters for catering to kids

SAN FRANCISCO -- The National Organization for Women filed complaints against local Hooters restaurants Thursday, but not for exploiting its scantily clad waitresses by subjecting them to leering and groping customers.

The subject this time was Hooters' catering to children.

The restaurants in San Francisco, San Bruno, Sacramento and Orange County are classified as "adult entertainment" establishments but also serve minors, NOW's California chapter said in papers filed with police and prosecutors.

What's more, the organization said, Hooters provides child menus, high chairs and booster seats, and sells T-shirts in children's sizes that identify the wearer as a "Future Hooters Girl."

Patricia Bellasalma, NOW's California president, asserted that Hooters is violating state and local laws prohibiting sexually oriented "adult" businesses from serving minors. The chain is also violating federal employment standards, she said.

Bellasalma said the federal government has not subjected Hooters to the rules requiring employers to protect their workers from harassment by customers. The Atlanta-based chain has successfully argued that its employees know they will be working in sexually charged surroundings, Bellasalma said.

But in recent years, she said, the company has promoted itself as more family-friendly. She cited a statement on hooters.com that "10 percent of the parties we serve have children in them."

Is NOW the group of menopausal bare my boobs to protest?

I thought that was an eviromental leftist type group.

They all look alike.

Instead of protesting ya think they would do something for humanity they claim to care about.

Like devote some time to the people of Calcutta or nurse the Cholera stricken children of Haitti.

Volenteer at the Humane Society.

I didn’t think you could top your first flip of stupid but this post upped the ante and topped it.

Do you find women offensive? Do you wear a burka? Have you EVER been to a pool or beach? Cause you’ll find far skimpier outfits there. Church lady types such as you are getting on my nerves.

There is a difference between environments where sex is pushed and where sex is incidental.

Shoot, in an emergency room you get full frontal nudity. Am I campaigning against that? No. It has to do with PUSHING SEXUALITY ON KIDS.

I could care less if I get on your nerves.

It is true there is a matter of degree.

Obviously some places are worse than others.

For example, I’d rather see someone take their kids to Hooters than to a strip club.

Still, a deliberately pushy sexualized sell is not ok for kids, I don’t care if people want to pretend otherwise.

Who on this thread would take their kid to a whore? To a strip club? Sit and read Penthouse together?

It’s all about where you draw the line.

How is hooters worse than a family restaurant with pretty girls serving you?

Get a grip. If the food was all that good, they wouldn’t need T&A to sell it and I’ve eaten there.

“How is hooters worse than a family restaurant with pretty girls serving you?”

It’s the purpose of the restaurant.

Why does anyone go to Hooters? The name itself tells you why. They don’t hide it. The purpose is to leer at very scantily clad young women who have height and weight and measurement requirements to make sure they are as sexy as possible.

No one is against pretty girls. I have pretty girls of my own in my family.

I might ask you: would you take kids to a Playboy bunny bar for Shirley Temples? If not, why not?

No one goes to to Hooters for the food. They go to ogle and leer without consequences, in a manner that would not be tolerated at a Denny’s or a Waffle House or Chez Michel’s.

I’m not a fan. Never been inside one. Can’t imagine Freepers who want big government, i.e., regulation that shuts down Hooters.

The story behind that sketch is that they didn’t have one “ready” so Murray and Martin ad libbed it on the spot.
