Administration's problem: How to spread advice without causing alarm?
Suppose the unthinkable happened, and terrorists struck New York or another big city with an atom bomb. What should people there do? The government has a surprising new message: Do not flee. Get inside any stable building and don’t come out till officials say it’s safe.
The advice is based on recent scientific analyses indicating that a nuclear attack is much more survivable if you immediately shield yourself from the lethal radiation that follows a blast, a simple tactic seen as saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Even staying in a car, the studies show, would reduce casualties by more than 50 percent; hunkering down in a basement would be better by far.
But a problem for the Obama administration is how to spread the word without seeming alarmist about a subject that few politicians care to consider, let alone discuss. So officials are proceeding gingerly in a campaign to educate the public.

The first thing I would do is talk to Americans like they are adults instead of talking down to them like they are a bunch of helpless children. Tell it like it is. We can handle it.
Well, I know Obama wouldn’t want to inconvenience himself by telling people how to save their lives, but the MSM seems to be getting this story out in spite of themselves.
“Gee. How can The One tell people that they should stay inside to avoid radiation instead of dying by the millions, without upsetting more voters? I wonder. I wonder.”

What SHOULD they do? Will it matter? Won’t they be dead?
Crawling in the “Way Back Machine”, the first 36 hours, or so, are crucial for those that are down wind of the blast area, IIRC. That’s when most of the radioactive particulates are falling out of the air. That’s the stuff that will kill you quickest, beyond the actual blast and immediate effects. You breath it in and it poisons you from the inside out. Staying put, and making your area as airtight, or even better positive pressurized with filtered air, increases short term survival rates dramatically. Once the initial danger has passed, you evacuate the area perpendicular to the fall out path, so you are not in the danger zone any longer than need be.
Hmm, paying attention in all those NBC classes may payoff, after all :-)

The Most true statement I’ve heard all day.
al Qaeda at least is honest in its brutal statements they intend to use WMD when they can. We have been lucky intercepting and stopping WMD plotters busy at work on it... so far.
What they really mean: Gather in nice small groups in enclosed areas so you’ll be easier to control...
The REAL strategy for a nuclear attack on US soil:
1) Accept the fact YOU ARE OWN YOUR OWN
2) they’ll be NO government agencies
3) LEO will be taking care of their own families
4) Hospitals will be over burdened
5) Chaos will reign
Pass out iodine tablets and tell everybody they’re Tic Tacs.
I guess this is part of the 0-boy’s theory we could “absorb” a cataclysmic terror attack. And our national enemies can take heart because he has foresworn the use of nukes under any circumstance, even in retaliation.

Actually many people would be able to survive one of the main things is to try and shelter yourself from the immediate exposure. When I was young we practiced in school for nuclear fallout and many American’s had Shelters built in their back yards.

No kidding! I am stunned it hasn't happened already, given our porous southern border. I'm surprised that AQ hasn't seized a school or blown up a crowded shopping mall. Much, much easier to do than building, delivering and detonating a nuke halfway around the world. Think about what a Mooselimb nutjob could do with a garden sprayer full of gasoline and a Bic lighter in a crowded shopping mall.....
