The Senate has passed a sweeping bill to make food safer, sending it to the House in the waning days of Congress.
This is the second time the Senate has passed the bill, which would give the government broad new powers to increase inspections of food processing facilities and force companies to recall tainted food. The chamber passed the bill for the first time three weeks ago, but it was caught in a constitutional snag when senators mistakenly included tax provisions that are by law supposed to originate in the House.
The version of the legislation passed by the Senate on Sunday is amended to avoid another such mishap.
The $1.4 billion bill would place stricter standards on imported foods and require larger producers to follow tougher rules for keeping food safe.

For all of the fireworks surrounding DREAM, DADT, Tax-rate extensions, *this* seems to be THE BILL that they insist on passing, without fanfare, by ‘any means necessary - fair or foul’.....
Am I the only one who’s finding this to be ominous in the extreme??

And the prices of food will continue to skyrocket the the DC communist bureaucrats as they shut down food manufactures for minor discrepancies and cut off the food supply slowly and surely. Then the people will suffer need of daily food much like Russia and China and other communist nations and will be forced under the boot-heel of DC communist politicians.
Folks, we are witnessing the destruction of America and the terrorists of DC and local statehouses are Americans worst enemies.
They don't want to be tagged as hating the childrens when much bigger issues should be the center of debate.
True, it's a lousy bill but it would be demogogued mercilessly in early '11 by the MSM if it didn't pass and there are MUCH huger issues at stake (like repealing Obamacare) which need to fill the airwaves.
Not at all. Monsanto and ConAgra can't want this legislation this bad for any good reason. It fails the sniff test...
Deep down, I think the powers that be know the "stuff" is slowly starting to hit the fan and the chickens are coming home to roost. Some see opportunity. Some are just scarred. All are determined to put a government strangle hold on the food supply. Why? I don't see any earth shaking political hay to be made off this bill- something ain't right.
There is so much more to this rotten thing, but the media shields it and the sheeple do not see.

When the most dangerous body of humans on the planet, the senate, thinks this bill is innocuous, but so important to pass that they screw up, make the necessary changes, while throwing peanuts to the monkeys by not passing other bills, something smells to high heaven. We can only hope that time runs out on the lame duck, but something says, a finger in the eye, beats apple pie.

Whenever it gives government more power, just vote against it.
This bill was slipped into the Continuing Resolution Bill which funds the US until March.
I think that whole Omnibus spending bill was a red herring. They knew it was so onerous that it wouldn’t pass. But in order to pass the CR the Republicans would allow the Food Safety bill to be included.
I wrote Coburn - who convinced me it was a bad bill and Corker my senator and Alexander (also my senator) who co-sponsored the bill.
Politics as usual.
I am a low-income person and they are making it harder and harder for people who DON’T want government assistance to survive.
I will live in a tent and live off of my garden before I expect my neighbors tax dollars to support me.
I am so disgusted and frustrated.
Just another unnecessary abrogation of our rights. Who in their right mind wants a bureaucrat to run their life? Let the market work.

It’s even scarier than that - it’s a bill that is so vaguely written that it, in effect, infinitely expands the purview of the FDA, giving it a sweeping blank check to write, and enforce, any rules it darn well pleases to regulate anything it darn well pleases, with no provision for little details like ‘oversight’, ‘accountability’, ‘due process’ or ‘recourse’.....

Mistakenly? We know they admit they don't read the bills. They obviously haven't read the Constitution either.
You do realize that Republicans are sponsoring this bill, right? Sure is a funny way to pick a fight. I always thought Republicans stood for smaller gubmint. When I reminded my Senator, Lamar! Alexander's (RINO - TN and cosponsor of S510) staff about that wee little point they hung up on me......
