The History Channel is a joke. As others pointed out, it is filled with real life docu-dramas that I have no interest in watching. Its one expensive, headline “history” series was “America: The Story of Us” which was an absolute disaster—shallow and wrong-headed analysis.

Having said that, sadly, I believe their marking department when they say that the reason they changed their programming is because this crap sells and that straight history doesn't, especially if its before WW II.

As for this group—they need to get on with their lives. Arguing that Secession was legitimate is like arguing that its not Constitutional to put fluoride in water.

” Whats a GW Sermonette? “

My tongue-in-cheek way of referring to gratuitous references to “Man-Made-Global-Warming”, and, by extension, how evil we humans are.......

Whether or not you believe in what the commercial says is not the issue.

If you believe a network is responsible for their content then they can do as they wish.

Yeah, they have had some good stuff on WWII as well as the American Revolution, the Dark Ages, the Roman Empire, the War of 1812, and even the Civil War (I saw a special on Sherman’s march that was excellent). Most of it is crap, but there are diamonds in the rough. Worth scrolling through the guide anyway, I usually find 1 or 2 to DVR every week. I find History International to be better for the time period that currently facinates me, medieval Europe.

There are plenty of people across the whole political spectrum who remain desperately and intentionally ignorant. The rest of us can actually make our own choices without being brainwashed by leftwing ideology.

Last week after mentioning the show about the 3rd reich a FReeper launched into a rant about it being a pro leftwing nazi apology propaganda show. It turns out that the guy didn’t even watch the show which rendered his opinion of it, completely useless.

Simply stop watching the History Channel....noit hard to do since they moved to airing BS documentaries, etc.

Yep, tell me what "Pawn Stars" and "Dump Pickers" (or whatever that show is called) has to do, exactly, with history. That and ufo-ology and general SWAGs at things which might, or might not, be vaguely historical.

They lost me a while ago.

Crap, I don’t recall the name of the show, but was that the same one that was giving the German perspective on the “appeal” Hitler had?

I caught part of one this week that had interviews of Germans giving their version of events at the time indicating why Germans followed the Nazis as willfully as they did.

Agree and same goes for the Travel Channel. Their programing is now all about eating food. WTH?

Well, MTV hasn't shown Music Videos for what? 10? 15 years?

Ditto VH1. (Which, I'm assuming stands for "Video Hits-1")

I'm switching to a local TV carrier, dropping the price by about 50%, and dropping a ton of channels. Should be able to do this in the next month or two (just got a flyer on it in the mail). I can't wait.

If I could get ESPN through the basic cable package, I'd have switched over long ago. The new carrier is going to eat Time Warner Cable's lunch. They're not quite ala carte, but they've got a lot more options for programming.

The “appeal” of hitler was part of it but it seems that he was never as popular as we tend to think. Hitler rose to power on equal parts apathy, fear, anger, community organizing, manufactured crisis etc.

In the the homemade films you could see the fear in the eyes of some of the people as they gave the nazi salute. Diary entries from people who said they didn’t believe the official story on the reichstag fire but they didn’t mind being watched because they hadn’t done anything wrong. Other stories talked about the loss of their children to the reich.

Most telling was the opening narration that said something along the lines of “We didn’t all support the reich but we were all guilty. We all breathed the same air”.

Hey, anyone can say anything they want...but the rules you mentioned that stop the government from taking away someones soapbox have nothing to do with this.

You believe a private company should be forced to carry an advertisement for something it deems objectionable?

Finally this has nothing to do with being PC. The History Channel has worked with Confederate history groups on several occasions but this group distorts the facts to make the Confederacy look completely innocent...this coming from someone who thinks they did have the right to secession (but glad it failed).

Anyone who leads with the “Dishonest Abe” canard isn’t worthy of further consideration AFAIC.

During the pre-Revolutionary segment, I noticed they (intentionally?) avoided the term “Tea Party” when describing the acts that occurred in Boston Harbor.

Didn’t want to give a modern day moment any credibility of patriotism? I think so, since the “Tea Party” has been a term used for over 230 years and then, all of sudden, the term is obviously missing.

I don’t really think or care about politics when I watch it.

is the question of whether or not states have the right to succeed from the Union at the top of the priority list?

A higher priority would be the question of whether or not we could kick some out

It seems to be taken over by reality shows like Pawn Stars, Pickers, Car shows, Ice Road Truckers, and an endless slew of UFO shows.

Their ratings have never been higher. They've actually cracked the basic cable top 10 a few weeks, something they never came close to doing when they actually ran history.
