Cop shoots, kills family dog (Golden Retriever)

A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.

But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.

“He’s a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but he’s never bitten anyone.”

A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

Your right is not to over-react like some nancy-boy and shoot it.

A barking dog is different than an attacking dog.

I've lived a long time and have had many barking dogs come right up to me and I've never been bit.

Perhaps people like you should just stay home where it is safe.

Mailmen go door to door for a living...

How do they possibly survive without a gun and shooting dogs on a daily basis?

Exactly!

In my line of work, our company policy is to trust no dogs.

It doesn’t matter if it’s one of those small bug-eyed mexican barking rats, or if it’s a harmless golden retriever. If it shows any aggression we skip that house and go onto the next service for inspection.

All this could have been avoided if the owner had kept their dog under control.

it could have also been avoided if the doofus cop had stayed at the donut shop. The dog was contained by the electronic fense

OMG.

On another note, we happened to be a local night club this summer and there was a FOP convention going on.

An out-of-town drunken cop viciously assaulted a waitress in the night club and was *just* about to be arrested for it when his buddies flashed their badges and the local cops _just let him walk away_.

Don’t cops carry mace or pepper spray anymore?

Goldens may occasionally bite when greatly provoked, but by instinct as bird retrievers they do not bite hard or repeatedly like other breeds.

Notice in the story no one saw what happened and that it was a single bite. I imagine a golden might bite if stuck in the eye or punched or their tail was stomped on, but thats about it I have had several and they would tolerate much abuse from small kids but would defend themselves (mostly by moving away or a quick movement to show their displeasure) when played with to the point of being hurt. Children need to be taught how to act around animals (and humans) and until they understand they should be supervised at all times. Children bite other children (and adults) and pull hair too until they learn better.

Not to defend the cop much...but Clayton County Ga is about as close to a cesspool of a county you can get here in metro ATL-GA. Their High School has lost accreditation, it is about as coirrupt of a place you can find...and the dog population is probably 90% Pitbull. I would hate to be a cop there.

"Your" an idiot.

The regular USPS employee knows who's a risk after about one day on the job.

If an unconfined (or invisibly-confined) dog attacks, expect the target to defend himself ... regardless of where the dog is in relation to property lines.

For instance, I’d sooner shoot an invisibly-confined pit bull on your property than let it get within 10-feet of my five-year-old daughter. I don’t know that I’d have shot in this case — but I don’t know that I wouldn’t have, either.

Sorry, can’t play both sides. Your comment was in support of a justification to harrass the families of LEO’s because private citizens are harrassed due to their names being public.

Whatever disdain you have of “special treatment” LEO’s get that private citizens do not is not the point. The point is someone is advocating publicly outing a families private information so that they can be harrassed.

The golden didn’t bite the cop. The dog just barked at the cop.

But hopefully, you can tell the difference between a golden retriever and a pitbull.

Mailmen can skip houses ... cops can’t.

Anyway — do mailmen still go door-to-door? I don’t think our mailman ever gets out of his little car.

I don’t know Dragnet, but let’s release the names of their families if they do something stupid so that their kids can be called names at school - and bombs placed in their wife’s car. (sarcasm)

See the dangerous path you are going down?

A resident called police to report that someone was selling meat from the back of a white pickup truck, King said.”””

Sooooo- this cop was patrolling on foot looking for someone in a white truck? I call BS.

Why not look at it from the mailman’s perspective.

We do. That's why the dog is inside away from our front yard. I respect his fear. I just don't think a cop has any business shooting a family dog to death. If a cop has the same fear of a Golden Retriever as a Pit Bull, he needs a desk job.
