A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.
But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.
“He’s a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but he’s never bitten anyone.”
A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.
The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

Why would you bring the Officer’s family into this? Honestly, you want people harrassing his children because of something he did on the job? There are sick people out there - and whether this Officer was justified or not - his wife and children don’t deserve being “outed”.

What is the penalty for an average Joe that shoots someone’s dog on a city street because it is barking at him?

If discharging a firearm in a given situation isn’t legal for me, neither should it be legal for the police.

Because this idiot 'officer' thought it appropriate to kill someone elses family member for barking at him. That's why.
I agree with the nightstick comment. I don’t know how this dept handles training for these circumstances.
And a smart officer would have just waited. I've had hundreds of heighborhood dogs run out to bark at me during my life, not one of them ever bit me. Perhaps the cop just needed to put on his big-boy pants, talk to the dog, and move along.
We still have meter readers in our neighborhood(shortly to be replaced by smart meters) and they manage to go into side and back yards..and make their rounds without a gun or mace. They do carry a stick with a ball on the end.
All dogs are possibly mean, or scared, but dealing with them is as much a part of the job as dealing with people.
It was. Read it again. Dog was shot on it's owners property. If it had left the property, you'd have a point. As it is, you don't...
Our female Golden Retriever/Black Lab mix barks like crazy when this particular mailman comes to our house. She is always in the house, but the mailman has warned us that he will sue us if the dog hurts him. We make sure she is in the house and the front door is closed.
The mailman is still freaked out whenever he hears her bark. Some people are just scared of any dog.
Well, you almost had a backer for your side of this but...
#1 Boomer was killed about 25 feet from his spot on the front porch, close to her front door, King said. He was not on a leash.
#2 The family had an electric fence, but there was not a sign alerting the officer it was there, Daniel said.
Missing information how far away was the cop. The dog was controlled...by the fence. If the dog charged up to the invisible fence line and stopped, didn’t advance past the fence... and the cop was on the sidewalk shooting in towards the dog...AND HOUSE ...What the heck really happened here. 25 ft. off the front porch isn’t very far in a big yard.
Flip-side as I see it. We always trained out dogs to stay in the backyard.
I do think an unsupervised dog in the front yard can present an unusual hazard. I’ve approached fenced yards where dogs behave aggressively at the fenceline. Walk through the gate and ...their your best buddy. If you didn’t know it...you wouldn’t walk through that gate.
As a person who visits pets in their homes when the owner is not around...animals can and do behave differently than when the owner is there.

Forget that the guy is cop for a minute. Assume it’s you walking down the street and a dog runs toward you. Do you freak out and shoot it? Or do you use a touch of common sense?
I’ve been around dogs all my life. I’ve never had to deal with a Pitbull, but I’ve faced just about every other breed, including Dobies and Shepherds. Most dogs just want you go let them identify you. It’s no big deal.
Of course, if you are a wuss, it might be a problem.
You are sick, truly sick.
You are blaming a family for their husband/father’s actions. It’s idiots like you that inflame these situations to the point where someone might harm a child or a woman because their husband did something at work that has absolutely NOTHING to do with them.
How do you justify this? It’s beyond sick.
99.9% of dogs, regardless of breed, _bark at strangers_ approaching their home.
That was one of the prime motivations of domesticating dogs, in the first place.
I find it incomprehensible that anyone who has to pass so many tests to qualify for law enforcement is unaware of that extremely common knowledge.

Well, ya see Cathy if this had been a citizen that shot this dog, the citizens name would be all over the papers and Internet....
People are getting really angry about law enforcement playing military and treating the rest of us like escaped enemy...

I understand your point but I have a question. If you, as a private citizen, are walking down the street minding your own business, and somebody’s dog comes running toward you, what do you do?
If an unknown dog is racing towards you in what looks like an attack, do you have the right to defend yourself using deadly force?
The dog *was* under control.
Put on the collar and then step across the “invisible fence”.
You’ll feel *very* “controlled”.
A *lot* of housing developments forbid the use of above ground fences so buried e-fences are quite common.
The ginormous receiver sticking out of the dog’s collar is quite obvious to anyone who’d take half a second to actually *look*.
