Armenian police target teenage rock cult

AFP - When police officers arrived at 13-year-old Masha's home, searched her room and inspected her computer, it was not because they suspected her of any crime.

Her offence was simply to be a devoted follower of the angst-ridden punk-rock subculture known as 'emo', in an ex-Soviet state where pressures to conform remain strong.

"It was offensive and frightening at the same time," said Masha, a schoolgirl in the Armenian capital, clearly upset by the experience.

Police in Yerevan have been conducting a campaign against the capital's small but controversial emo community since the recent suicides of two teenagers who were rumoured to have been emo fans.

They claim that the subculture represents a threat to young people's welfare.

Officers have visited schools, searched pupils whose distinctive clothing marks them out as possible 'emos', and mounted surveillance on public places where young people gather.

Several fans have been detained for questioning, despite the lack of any specific legislation against the musical genre or its followers.

In a recent newspaper interview, Armenia's Chief of Police, Alik Sarkisian, claimed that emo could "damage our gene pool". "We should fight against such phenomena because they are morally harmful to our people," he said.

Emo -- an abbreviation of 'emotional' -- is a more melodic and melancholy form of punk rock. It has origins in the United States but has become a well-established global subculture in recent years.

>>Moose?

No, I ‘d describe moose as more shoegazer.

I used to listen to Sunny Day Real Estate during their “Diary” years. The lead singer became a Christian, half of the band joined the Foo Fighters, and the band died before My Chemical Romance was a glimmer in the first cutter’s razor blade.

These bands would play metal if they knew how to play their instruments.

Same crap as delinquents in the 50s, 60s “tune outs”, 70s burnouts, the Ozzy hysteria, devil metal in the 80s, speed metal, death metal, goth, etc.

Remember when these were latch key kids?

First they came for the Emos. I am not an Emo so I said nothing.

Then they came for the Goths. I am not a Goth so I said nothing.

Then they came for the Rastabilly Skank enthusiasts. And there was no one left to speak.

Back in the 70’s, we would have just called these kids ‘p*ssies’ and kicked their asses.

You think so? The emo personality seems to be the diametric opposite of that of the X-using rave scene kid. BWDIK? I never was a member of any of these subcultures- I was always on the fringe of them.

Sunny Day Real Estate got back together, without the bassist who left for the Foo Fighters, for two more albums in the late 90s/early 2000s. Then they were involved in a band called Fire Theft for most of the 2000s. Last year, in 2009, the entire original lineup of Sunny Day got back together for a reunion tour. I saw them when they stopped at the 9:30 Club in DC- great show.

Wow, the 9:30 still exists - it brings back memories of Jawbox, Velocity Girl, and all the other awesome bands of that era...it’s too bad WHFS didn’t make it.

“You think so? The emo personality seems to be the diametric opposite of that of the X-using rave scene kid.”

I knew this ex-goth girl about 25 years my junior who did the scene.

I guess ecstacy pretty much releases all of your serotonin and turns you into some sort of emotional rollercoaster; complete with drunk-like, hot breath blown three inches away from your face, eyelash curling (free of charge), “I LOooOOOoove YOU, man’s.”

She talked as if the Emo’s were just rolled up in the whole deal along with a lot of other kid’s who were under 21.

But, you’re right. My statement was too emphatic. If not for her input, I wouldn’t have anything to add.
