When a proposal to encourage end-of-life planning touched off a political storm over “death panels,” Democrats dropped it from legislation to overhaul the health care system. But the Obama administration will achieve the same goal by regulation, starting Jan. 1.

Mr. Blumenauer, the author of the original end-of-life proposal, praised the rule as “a step in the right direction.”

After learning of the administration’s decision, Mr. Blumenauer’s office celebrated “a quiet victory,” but urged supporters not to crow about it.

“While we are very happy with the result, we won’t be shouting it from the rooftops because we aren’t out of the woods yet,” Mr. Blumenauer’s office said in an e-mail in early November to people working with him on the issue. “This regulation could be modified or reversed, especially if Republican leaders try to use this small provision to perpetuate the ‘death panel’ myth.”

Moreover, the e-mail said: “We would ask that you not broadcast this accomplishment out to any of your lists, even if they are ‘supporters’ — e-mails can too easily be forwarded.”

The e-mail continued: “Thus far, it seems that no press or blogs have discovered it, but we will be keeping a close watch and may be calling on you if we need a rapid, targeted response. The longer this goes unnoticed, the better our chances of keeping it.”

In the interview, Mr. Blumenauer said, “Lies can go viral if people use them for political purposes.”

Opps: I missed this on the copy

Several Democratic members of Congress, led by Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Senator John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia, had urged the administration to cover end-of-life planning as a service offered under the Medicare wellness benefit. A national organization of hospice care providers made the same recommendation.

The same kind of structure will be used with the ‘Food Safety Bill-—employees of the FDA will be making rules & enforcing them without any approval from Congress.

It's one thing....for a Doctor and their patients to have these discussions about how they want to live..and how they want to die.

It's quite another thing to have a government mandate to make and pay Doctor's to have these discussions.

All that said....I work in the Health Care field...and have seen a lot of heart breaking things happen to people at the end of their lives.

Dear Old Folks,

Don't give us any claptrap about "raising us" or "saving the world from National Socialism and World Communism" or any of that rotgut. Just go somewhere and die.

Sincerely,

B. Hussein Obama

P.S. Be lucky you got out of the womb before I became Pres.

I think a lot of useless dhims should be the guinea pigs to test this, if they were reduced to stains on the pavement no one would mourn or miss them.

"...employees of the FDA will be making rules & enforcing them without any approval from Congress."

We are also seeing this with the EPA and Department(s) of Ecology. The liberal dream is to empower their bureaucrats to create and enforce law without approval from congress. It is the next step toward governing in secrecy.

This is a horrifying and blatant power grab by Obama and his shadowy bureaucrats who are writing up the rules and regulations for our lives without going through our elected representatives.

To all those who have been calling Obama a fascist from day one (including me) you are CORRECT. He is in the process of grabbing dictatorial power through fiat while appearing to be harmless as he flits around the world on junkets and vacation.

Be very afraid....we can't count on the courts any more, the media, academia....they've all been infiltrated and are controlled. We see what's happening to the military, our last bastion.....it's going to come down to each of us to figure out how to survive a Nazi regime....it's coming fast.

So much for TRANSPARENCY!!!

Oh, how I hate this administration and all the power-hungry, egotistical, devious, deceitful, and arrogant Obama people who want to control us rather than work FOR us.

"The longer this goes unnoticed, the better our chances of keeping it.”

Representative Earl Blumenauer (D) of Oregon is emblematic of progressives and especially, his home state of Oregon. They will trade power (even if it is short lived) for the stability and security of the union without hesitation.

As longs as idiots watch TV then he will be in power. Price Al Waleed’s Fox News is no better. TV keeps the muslim in power.

Baby boomers and seniors are so screwed. 43% of people over 60 voted for him and 50% of 45 to 59 year old baby boomers voted for the muslim. Nice job - you are as stupid as the young kids.

“Granny got murdered by the muslim’s Death Panel during the Happy Holidays.”

I have been saying he is evil all along. Idiots are saying - “he is stupid, he won’t get reelected - oh forget about the BC - we cannot be distracted.”

Military is gone too. Keep watching TV because that is his power base. You cable and sat Tv subscription keeps him in power. A lot of idiots also think Saudi Prince Al Waleed’s Fox News is our friend. LOL! Yeah sure it is.

You are so right in your analysis. Would that everyone would wake up to what's right under their noses....the non-stop evilness of Obama (who is NOT moving to the center, BTW, as the media is attempting to convince us).

Mark Belling, who is sitting in for Rush and a sub I generally can take or leave alone, has been brilliant today. He's onto the ObamaCare bait-and-switch scam just revealed a few hours ago....and he's like a protective dog with a bone in its mouth, shaking it with passion and outrage.

He's ripping the lefties a new one on subject after subject. He's scarcely come up for air.

It's very inspiring and motivating to hear his focused emotion after Rush being so lackadaisical and lacking in show prep, original research and cutting-edge comments since the day he returned from his honeymoon.
