Next time, try harder (Bloomberg's epic NYC blizzard fail)

What a disaster: Ambulances unavailable. Trains stalled for hours. Streets unplowed. Fire trucks stuck in the snow. Buses canceled.

These were not mere "inconveniences" -- as Mayor Bloomberg put it at one point -- in the wake of Sunday's widely, and accurately, predicted snowstorm; in some cases, they were potentially life-threatening foul-ups. And to such an extent, you've just got to wonder if the response could have been better.

Reports coming in that the Sanitations Workers Union staged a work slowdown during the blizzard to protest recent budget cuts. This debacle was all about UNION PAYBACK.

I live in an area of the Up of Michigan whereby we get a lot of snow. In my neighborhood, the city does a great job on snow removal. Another thing is when it snows there are people whom take the time to clean out mailboxes so the mail can be delivered and fire hydrants to be cleared of snow. (even though I am in wheel cahir, I get on the tractor, and I clean snow for myself and others in my neighborhood.)

America has to stop relying on the government entities to do things. Get out there in NY, MA, PA, NJ, Connecticut and so forth and put some effort in getting ypur own butt out to the snow bank, driveway shoveled or sidewalk cleared.

Those who depend on government when things go bad will always be disappointed.

...grand demonstration of the pussification of blue state municipal leaders and workers.

Chicago is as blue as can be, and manages to keep its streets clear of snow.

The scariest sentence in history:

“Hello I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

Minneapolis is just as bad. Due to “budget cuts” they don’t plow ANYTHING until it stops snowing. By then it’s to late, buses, trucks, ambulances, tax payers.. are ALL stuck in the snow. It’s a huge mess and takes days to clean up if there is much snow.

——Grab a shovel and dig in-——

I saw an extensive piece on Fox describing the laws in various cities. You are required by law to shovel snow from sidewalks and can be fined if you do not. One palce had fines of $1,500.

The North east can just go to hell. It is just a drag on America

I’d recently read a list of the projected 10 biggest cities in the US twenty years in the future; I believe Washington DC was the only one on the list that had regular snowfall. For all of the others (NYC, Chicago) that were projected to “fall off” the list, the costs of heating, as well as the disruptions caused by events like this (however uncommon) made them places people won’t want to live, do business, or travel to.

Not meaning to be a smarta**, but where are you going to shovel it to? If you clear the sidewalks you clog the streets. If you plow the streets you fill the sidewalks. Upstate dumptrucks used to go there to unload the stuff into the river.

I believe here in NJ you must have a clear/safe walkway within 24 hours after the snow stops falling. I’m not sure this is unreasonable (and I do the shoveling).

People I know in Pennsylvania told me that if you don’t clear your mailbox you simply won’t get mail until it can be put in from the jeep (all mail is delivered by jeep where they are). This also holds true if someone parks in fron of your mailbox any time of the year.

At least Tinfoil Mike was actually in NYC for the storm. When DC got hammered like this in 1987, Marion Barry was at the Superbowl in California...and didn’t come home to “supervise.” The city totally bungled the snow removal and cleanup, and Barry took the blame.

I have 3 hours or by morning if it stops overnight here in my city in CT (each city has their own ordinances). I am not sure it is strictly enforced.

My street also has a parking ban on the odd side of the street (almost all on-street parking), with fines if you don’t move the car. And yet my neighbors were parked in front of my odd-numbered house all storm long and no fines or towing.

I remember not getting plowed out for days when I lived in Maine (born & raised),

THis isn't Maine. It's New York City, and stuff like this gets handled. It hasn't been handled yet.

It was Rock Island IL a few years ago. QCTimes.com might have the story.

Don’t know if NYC hired a similar guy, but the response to the storm makes me wonder!
