New federal nutrition labels required for 40 popular cuts of meat

Coming soon to a grocery store near you: Those nutrition labels slapped on everything from cereal to soda pop will soon be required on packages of meat.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday morning that the new rule, slated to start Jan. 1 of 2012, requires that 40 of the most common cuts of poultry, pork, beef and lamb include labels that disclose to consumers the total number of calories, the number of calories from fat and the total grams of fat and saturated fat.

...The rule will apply to whole cuts of meat and poultry, including boneless chicken breast, tenderloin steak, and ground or chopped meat such as hamburger or turkey, said officials for USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Looks to me like yet another bunch of bureaucrats went and put themselves on the Federal Agency To Be Deleted List.

...we can either do this the easy way, or we will just have to do it the HARD way......

I decide what to consume. Preferably a rare filet Mignon, baked potato, extra sour cream and real butter, salad/bleau cheese dressing, garlic bread AND desert-preferably chocolate with whipped heavy cream.

Looks healthy to me.

How bout some wings and ribs on the side?

This'll drive the food Nazis nuts. Garlic bread blanketed with bacon salt.

How in the hell did this get by the Dept of Agriculture? Will they have to put labels on live cattle at the auction?

An egg is an egg. Beef is beef. Milk is milk. A grapefruit is a grapefruit. If you sell something just as God made it, why label it?

Using their logic, we’ll put MSDS sheets on firewood next.

I remember being in my favorite wine and cheese place after the first set of regs came into play and the cheesemonger almost forgot to add the nutrition label to the brie I was buying.

I don’t eat that one anymore. I found one with a higher fat content.

Hi there. I just got back from the market where I bought a half-dozen old fashioned DONUTS. I didn’t read the damn label. Can’t wait to have these with my steaming hot COFFEE in the morning.

Have you tried the triple-cream brie from Trader Joe’s?
If you do, you won’t look back or be able to eat anything less.

YOU are welcome.

Remember this great scene from “Sleeper?”

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070707/quotes?qt0231370

“Dr. Melik: This morning for breakfast he requested something called “wheat germ, organic honey and tiger’s milk.”
Dr. Aragon: [chuckling] Oh, yes. Those are the charmed substances that some years ago were thought to contain life-preserving properties.
Dr. Melik: You mean there was no deep fat? No steak or cream pies or... hot fudge?
Dr. Aragon: Those were thought to be unhealthy... precisely the opposite of what we now know to be true.
Dr. Melik: Incredible.”
