Scientist: Climate change to intensify winter weather By Andrew Restuccia - 12/29/10 03:01 PM ET

This weekend’s massive blizzard in the Northeast has fueled the fire of climate skepticism that's pervasive in many parts of the United States. If we’re still getting major winter storms, skeptics say, how can the planet be warming?

E2 Wire put that question to Tom Peterson, chief scientist at the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration’s National Climatic Data Center.

Peterson said the latest climate change data indicate increases in global temperature result in more intense weather events, including winter storms.

As the planet warms, “frequency of storms will stay the same, but the intensity will increase,” he said.

“Multiple peer-review papers indicate that strong storms are likely to increase. So the climate change is changing the probability of a strong storm occurring,” he said.

Peterson warned that you cannot determine whether climate change is occurring based on an individual weather event. Instead, scientists study climate trends over the course of thousands of years.

“Weather events are pixels in the climate picture. Some are indicative of changes we are experiencing; some simply reflect the variability of weather and climate. As the world continues to warm, heat waves are an example of the former,” he said, while adding that extreme winter weather events are “examples of the latter.”

Peterson also said it’s important to distinguish between weather and climate.

“Weather is one individual event and how that plays out, and climate is the interconnection of those events,” he said.

But, Peterson concluded, “People will use individual events to justify whatever opinion they have on the matter.”

Where do you even start with anti-scientific claptrap like this?

Who ya gonna believe, ALGore, or your own eyes?

No one with at least a room temperature IQ is buying this AGW garbage any longer. Which explains why so many liberals ARE buying it.

These people act like we never had weather before algore invented global warming.

I can show these nuts many of my family's home movies from back in the late 50s where the snow is 3ft deep. The storm we got here in New England this week is nothing new at all. They've been hitting us for centuries.

The terrible flooding in Pakistan was attributed to hotter air holding more moisture and then hitting the Himalayas. They did have some extremely hot weather this year. I have lived in the mid-Atlantic region for 50 years. Last winter and this are colder than the past 10, but by no means as cold as I remember from 20 to 50 years ago. Also, this summer was record breaking for its heat. All I know is that the worldwide weather the past two years has been unusually severe, with no volcano to explain it like Pinatubo. That one in Iceland was not anywhere near as big.

Ah, but ‘global warming’ caused by carbon emissions, was suppose to create a “greenhouse effect” which melted the polar ice caps...this hasn't happened. Also, Europe was never suppose to have snow again.

Children were going to grow up never to see snow...THAT is what the “climatologists” stated. We have proof of what they said:

http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/snowfalls-are-now-just-a-thing-of-the-past-724017.html

“Global warming, the heating of the atmosphere by increased amounts of industrial gases, is now accepted as a reality by the international community”......”According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event”.

“Children just aren't going to know what snow is,” he said.”

Calling David Viner! Calling David Viner!

These global warming asshats need to be fired from their jobs and sued for fraud!

While you and others apparently think this is a game Obama and his band of traitors are using the EPA to drive electric prices through the roof by attacking CO2 polluters.

It's not about global temperature change, it's about getting idiots like Lyndsey Graham to buy into laws that take money from YOU and using those dollars to enslave you.

Wake UP!

I have maintained for quite sometime that our means of obtaining detailed data has far outstripped our ability to organize that data into any sort of coherent package...alchemy, witchcraft, and sorcery all rolled into one package...man made global climate change(which used to be called man made global warming).

...there are worms crawling through the BS they’re trying to feed us.

Are you going to eat it?

Temps go up? Global Warming.
Temps go down? Global Warming.
No change? Global Warming.

NONE of these people forecast cold. It was supposed to get warmer and warmer and warmer. Now with the exact opposite happening, they tell us they’re not wrong - it just proves their theory.

Give me a break please.

He’s lying. If he doesn’t know that this winter’s weather is very typical of a La Nina he’s no scientist and should be fired from NOAA.

So, greenhouse [effect] is all about carbon dioxide, right?

In simple terms the bulk of Earth’s greenhouse effect is due to water vapor by virtue of its abundance. Water accounts for about 90% of the Earth’s greenhouse effect — perhaps 70% is due to water vapor and about 20% due to clouds (mostly water droplets), some estimates put water as high as 95% of Earth’s total tropospheric greenhouse effect (e.g., Freidenreich and Ramaswamy, ‘Solar Radiation Absorption by Carbon Dioxide, Overlap with Water, and a Parameterization for General Circulation Models,’ Journal of Geophysical Research 98 (1993):7255-7264).

The remaining portion comes from carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, ozone and miscellaneous other ‘minor greenhouse gases.’ As an example of the relative importance of water it should be noted that changes in the relative humidity on the order of 1.3-4% are equivalent to the effect of doubling CO2.
http://www.junkscience.com/Greenhouse/

Water Vapor Rules the Greenhouse System

Water vapor constitutes Earth’s most significant greenhouse gas, accounting for about 95% of Earth’s greenhouse effect (4). Interestingly, many ‘facts and figures’ regarding global warming completely ignore the powerful effects of water vapor in the greenhouse system, carelessly (perhaps, deliberately) overstating human impacts as much as 20-fold.
Water vapor is 99.999% of natural origin. Other atmospheric greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and miscellaneous other gases (CFC’s, etc.), are also mostly of natural origin (except for the latter, which is mostly anthropogenic).

Human activities contribute slightly to greenhouse gas concentrations through farming, manufacturing, power generation, and transportation. However, these emissions are so dwarfed in comparison to emissions from natural sources we can do nothing about, that even the most costly efforts to limit human emissions would have a very small— perhaps undetectable— effect on global climate.

But, Peterson concluded, “People will use individual events to justify whatever opinion they have on the matter.”

You mean like when they show charts of temperature variations for tiny, carefully selected periods of time rather than showing the charts for thousands or millions of years?

THE ACQUITTAL OF CARBON DIOXIDE
by Jeffrey A. Glassman, PhD

ABSTRACT:

"Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere [historically] is the product of oceanic respiration due to the well-known but under-appreciated solubility pump. Carbon dioxide rises out of warm ocean waters where it is added to the atmosphere. There it is mixed with residual and accidental CO2, and circulated, to be absorbed into the sink of the cold ocean waters. Next the thermohaline circulation carries the CO2-rich sea water deep into the ocean. A millennium later it appears at the surface in warm waters, saturated by lower pressure and higher temperature, to be exhausted back into the atmosphere. Throughout the past 420 millennia, comprising four interglacial periods, the Vostok record of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is imprinted with, and fully characterized by, the physics of the solubility of CO2 in water, along with the lag in the deep ocean circulation.

Notwithstanding that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, atmospheric carbon dioxide has neither caused nor amplified global temperature increases. Increased carbon dioxide has been an effect of global warming, not a cause [historically -etl]. Technically, carbon dioxide is a lagging proxy for ocean temperatures. When global temperature, and along with it, ocean temperature rises, the physics of solubility causes atmospheric CO2 to increase.

If increases in carbon dioxide, or any other greenhouse gas, could have in turn raised global temperatures, the positive feedback would have been catastrophic. While the conditions for such a catastrophe were present in the Vostok record from natural causes, the runaway event did not occur. Carbon dioxide does not accumulate in the atmosphere."

He should be ashamed to show his face in public after making such idiotic statements.

He much be the lowest in seniority around the office, and he’s the poor underling they trotted out to look like a fool this week.

I grow so weary of these nimrods. When will they have the humility to admit they don’t know what they’re talking about, and have no clue how to control the planet — and thus have no grounds to try to convince the rest of us to lay down our liberties for their schemes. Which, at bottom, is all this is about. Power.

first they say that global warming will end winters and that snow will be a thing of the past... then when that doesn’t happen, they change their mind and say, that um... well.... what we meant to say is that climate change will make winters even worse!

lol

These people are nothing but con artists that need to be prosecuted and thrown in jail for this scam
