Prof. Melissa Harris-Perry Ties Michael Vick Case To Slavery, Civil Rights On MSNBC
Mediaite ^ | December 29, 2010

Posted on 12/29/2010 8:30:41 PM PST by La Lydia

On tonight’s Rachel Maddow, EP Bill Wolff (filling in for Maddow) brought in Professor Melissa Harris-Perry for a fresh take, and she delivered: Michael Vick is the victim of centuries of black oppression– from dogs? Wolff requested of Harris-Perry a “historical” take on the matter, and while she barely mentioned Vick (and said nothing of Tucker Carlson), she gave an extensive history of African-Americans and dogs.

“We want to be really careful here,” she warned, “There are some complex issues at stake whenever you are talking simultaneously about African Americans and talking about issues of animal rights.” She explained that “questions about the humanity of black people and the relative importance of the life of animals have in fact been deeply connected,” complicating the issue for Vick. To tie the argument to the story, she noted that domestic animals are often “fetishized” such that, while “we’re not really all that horrified” about fur or food animals, the killing of a dog is a cardinal sin.

Compare this to the fact that “one of the ways that black people were enslaved… was that black people were equated to animals,” she continued, and that “dogs were directly used against black people.”

She doesn’t elaborate further than noting that there is a “weird kind of interconnection and anxiety” between animal abuse and civil rights, so it’s left to the view to try to figure out how to weave her historical context into the Michael Vick case....

This leaves many open questions as to what many of her comments– especially the note about dogs being used against African Americans during the Civil Rights movement– have to do with Vick. Carried to its logical conclusion, Harris-Perry could perhaps be suggesting that a reason Vick behaved as he did against dogs was because, as an African-American, he was participating in a long-standing feud with canine-kind. His crime, she may be arguing, was a subconscious expression of racial anxiety, and must be understood as such before condemning Vick the way someone who has not experienced racial strife (ahem, Tucker Carlson) could not understand...

As the comments are so detached from the subject matter, it’s basically a Rorschach test of political ideology. Liberals will embrace the historical context. Those on the right will cry “race card.” Hopefully Harris-Perry will elaborate further in the future, as, if there was a highly sophisticated historical point directly related to Vick’s dog abuses in her commentary, something was lost in translation.

Where do they find these idiots? At Princeton. Race card? Of course. It's the only card she has in her deck.

Vick just received the Obama curse anyway. He’s now doomed. Obama puts the whammy on every athlete or team he speaks to or about.

Racism is very, very much alive in America. It’s just that the arrow is pointed in a different direction than liberals, the academy, and the MSM would have you believe.

Yeah (quizzically) That probably explains cock fighting also. And maybe some other blood sports. Damn I sure wish I was as smart as those oh so highly educated folks from the northeast.

Melissa H-P is one of the silliest people I have ever heard. I have no belief in her degrees. This is just a major case of dumb fu##. Nobody is that stupid without extra effort.

I am willing to let Michael Vick try again as he has served his prison time. MHP wants to turn the exercise into something that is needn’t be.

Savage was so right when he said liberals are mentally ill.

My guess is that they have done so many drugs they have blown their brains out.

Another thought...their marxist indoctrination has so destroyed their ability to think, period. The ex-KGB agents told how the curricula in America was based on cultural Marxist ideology (lies) (Heather has two mommies) All cultures are equal....Homosexuality is “good”..Diversity is our strength..Religion and ethical behavior is bad..(Tango makes Three) .

Ideas that are so bizarre and twisted, that no logic and reasoning can exist....they described it as ‘cognitive dissonance’. Our children are being raised with no foundation in logic, reason and science.

In fact, our children are being conditioned to NOT think. They are being indoctrinated into what to think.

It is all moral relativism, based in lies and feel good environmental —GW BS.

These people can not think when they reach adulthood because their foundation is screwed up.

Yes, but no one has perfected it like their African brothers who have given a name to a age old tradition... genocide. And today? The UN is addressing the possibility of genocide in the Ivory Coast. What year is it?

So, she must also theorize that African-Americans kill and rob one another because so many black Africans sold other blacks into slavery.

If he wants to play football, fine, no skin off my nose. How much lower can it go? But he should never be allowed any closer than 1,000 feet to any animal. My prediction: he will be in the news again in some violence-related story.

Oh, give me a friggin’ break!

Dog fighting is a popular sport among ghetto thugs, and Vick wasn’t about to give up his street creds.

But what do you expect, with a POTUS trying desperately to prove that he’s actually got TWO testicles (one on loan from the Hildebeast, according to Carville)?

Some day he might wake up and realize that most of America doesn’t give a rat’s butt about what’s important to inner city Chicago. Most of America plays by much different rules.

Oy. How DID we get into this fix?

.

Oh what BS!

Some years back a white man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for drowning a litter of puppies in a burlap bag -

No NFL career to return to

No millions in pay

Just fifteen (15) years in a state prison

-

And now Vick wants a “waiver” or a “Mulligan” so he can have little doggie as a pal!

.

Who has been raiding African blacks and selling them into slavery for the past 1,000 years? Yep, the “religion of peace” people.

Damned. If this women teaches at Princeton, how did they recruit her, from the “Book of Available Racists Teachers” or at some Democrat Party convention?

The Democrats/liberals are the most racist people I’ve ever seen, and they don’t like conservative Jews, most Christians, Black conservatives, crime victims who fight back, Buddhists (look what they allowed the Communists to do to them in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia), and people who eat meat.

Last I knew people held slaves, not dogs. So would it have been ok for Vick to treat people like he treated all those dogs, torturing and killing them? After all it wouldn't be his fault, but slavery's, something of course he's never experienced.

I found out that one of my ancestor's came here as an indentured servant in 1639. Do I get to kill and maim something because of that fact ? ( No, I don't want to kill or maim anything!)

Most "Vick Threads" on FR are filled with people posting in favor of Vick. Most of his defenders on FR seem to think that if you condemn Vick:

1.) you value animal life over human life

2.) you are no true Christian if you do not forgive Vick for being an evil sadist.

I see little difference between his FR defenders and his race card defenders. Maybe they are all Eagles fans or have Vick on their Fantasy Football teams.

I value animal life over the life of a human who tortures animals.

From my experience, dog fighting is popular throughout the South, with the Rednecks as well as the AA’s. slavery had nothing to do with it. or police dogs for that matter. The same can be said for Cock Fighting. As you drive thru the country side, you can spot the Rooster coops. If there are no rules against felons, I Don’t see he should be disqualified. Of course I am not a fan and if the SB was played in by back yard, I wouldn’t go to the window and watch.
