BEEBE, Ark. – Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 blackbirds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Saturday that it began receiving reports about the dead birds about 11:30 p.m. the previous night. The birds fell over a 1-mile area of Beebe, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area.

“There was a large hawk just sitting there on the patio wall, looking back in at the diners taking pictures. “

Any word on what kind of camera the hawk was using? It must have been one of those cute little Micro Four Thirds jobbies.

Had I used a comma after the word “diners,” your misplaced amusement with my sentence structure might make sense, lol.

Heh, we call them junk or garbage birds here.

Not a birder myself, but always had an interest in birds(maybe it's the aviation buff in me).

Unfortunately not a great variety around here in mid-MI, but better than other places I've lived.

I am way over 35 and I have no idea what ir means. By the way it is exactly 41.6 degrees right now. Odd?

I click "view replies" before posting, I see you have been enlightened many, many times already, so I'll not add to it.

Looks like most of the birds are males, which are generally guarding their roost site by choosing higher vantage points to warn the rest of the flock of threats. Red Winged Blackbirds also tend to group up this time of year and it’s not uncommon to see flocks of thousands of RWBBs. They prefer to hang out in marshy areas but will venture out into open fields and roost in tree tops. My guess would be some low flying aircraft caught the birds by surprise and in their effort to flee many were struck and killed.

When the Hebrew children were wandering in the wilderness, getting sick and tired of manna and moaning and groaning for meat, God sent them birds with an east wind that brought them 2 cubits deep, all about the camp of over 600,000 people.

A cubit being about 18 inches.

The Hebrew children paid a tremendous toll for all their bitching though.

He had also told them he would send them meat until it came out their nostrils.

I think you nailed it. We had a tornadic thunderstorm just north of Beebe on Friday morning. Could have sucked up the entire flock to freezing altitudes.

It got down to around 15 here in Arkansas last night so maybe they did freeze to death.
