You dig sideways, using the dirt from the sides of the hole to fill in the bottom. While the volume of the hole remains constant, the shape changes until it is wide, but shallow enough to get out of. Actually, I suspect you would keep digging on one side, producing a slope you climb out of, but I'm not stuck in a hole at this moment so I don't really need to think that hard about it.

I swear, Barry is one of the most STOO-PID™ persons whose ever set foot in the WH. And far from being a Harvard Law 'brainiac', with an IQ of 160+, his IQ is a below average 70, if that(1). And I'm starting to believe he never spent one minute in any college classroom, or ever personally took any tests. His whole 'adult' past is make believe. A phony deep-cover story made up for him by the KGB when he became a member of the Communist Party after graduating from high school(2).
(1) His below average IQ is apparent by the constant NEED of that Teleprompter. Without it he is a stumbling, mumbling, fool who can't string two COHERENT sentences together.
