Gunman’s Former College Instructor: ‘I Was Afraid for My Life’

January 10, 2011 at 7:37am by Scott Baker

“I wasn’t too surprised that it was Jerry Loughner. I felt like he was planning something all along – I just didn’t know when he was going to do it and where he was going to do it. Just from what the other students said, and what I experienced in the classroom, I just thank God he did not do anything to us. It is very sad to hear what happened yesterday.”

basically the neighbors say the dad is an angry weird loner. The interesting thing is that they really do seem to have found the website where Jared was getting his ideas. The guys running the website more or less said, yes, it sounds like he’s been reading our stuff. Loopy paranoid nonsense about the currency, immigrants and grammatical control.

I hate to throw water on a good rant, but there are lunatics like this all over the public schools nowadays. My wife has several students who are completely insane and are only able to function in a somewhat normal manner if they are heavily medicated. They are in the same classes with normal kids.

There have been numerous incidents where they have skipped medication and acted out. Thankfully, none have shown tendencies towards violence, but all it takes is a forgotten pill and one weird idea in their head.

It is entirely possible that Loughner was functional with medication and as an adult, chose to stop taking it. His parents can’t really be blamed for that. Sometimes, these kids use trickery to make their parents think they took their meds when they didn’t.

WE don't know enough abut the parents to judge them

But I will say it can be extremely difficult for middle class parents to get help for a severely mentally ill teenager

The rich can afford to go through the commitment process, the poor get those servcess paid for by the gubmint with help of gubmint lawyers and social workers to force it to happen despite all the laws impeding parents from getting treatment for almost-adult choldren ...but middle class? Just try going thrugh this on your own, at your own expense....

A large mental health center here will admit as inpatient for 3 day max, all prepaid upfront - many insurances won't touch this type of illness or pay for a couple days or weeks at most- every 365 days. Many teenagers are strong, wily and resistant enough to challenge every aspect of the commitment process. Judges and social workers will sympathize with the kid not the parents and even blame the parents

With no guarantee of treatment success, parents can pay out of pocket for inpatient care - see how fast $1000+ per day out of pocket evaporates in trying to get a child diagnosed and treated for an illness that, factually, may never be cured or even controlled enough to permit release

in a society that is hostile and resistant to getting and keeping your child hospitalized unless and until they have engaged in actual mayhem

I’ve never regarded the Miami Herald or the AP as anything but left-leaning. So the reporting and the publishing of these facts was very interesting.

In a situation like this why doesn’t the concerned person call every imaginable local, state, and federal agency until SOMEONE pays attention.

I can’t imagine having something like this on my conscience. To have known and not done enough...but at the same time, with today’s PC rules/laws would “they” have been able to stop Loughner? We’ll never know now.

If I was this kid’s parent, I would be majorly upset with you, dork. There are kids you struggle with and you hope will come around. You don’t isolate them and make them feel worse and encourage your class to pull a lord of the flies on them. What kind of a person are you anyway? Have you ever been to church? How do you think Christ would have approached this situation? Are you totally compassionless? I am betting this kid’s parents are in a continuation of their living hell right now along with everyone else who lost people in Tucson. What is wrong with you?

Careful where you're going there. When people can be arrested and incarcerated for the potential to commit crime all political enemies will be incarcerated. This is the logical end in leftist political discourse as its ideology cannot stand on merit.

I had a student like this in a class a couple of years ago. No matter how many times I complained to Admin, I was told that he was mentally ill, was a protected class, and that his therapist assured us he was "safe."

What a horrible position to be in. You and your students should not have to be concerned about your personal safety in the classroom. Perhaps concern over the tragedy in Arizona will lead to a change in policy at your school.

The parents knew they had a crazy on their hands. A responsible parent then does things to keep themselves and others safe. There are a lot of us who spied on our kids..searched their rooms..read their email..etc. Just doing our job as adults to make sure that our kids were not getting into trouble. We also talked to our kids and spent a lot of time with them and kept them involved with activities that socialized them and taught them right from wrong.
How did this guy have a gun and his parents not know it? If they knew it..then they should have known that was a big problem.

When I was in college, once a semester I would always have a Jared Loughner type in one of my classes.

We all knew this type was nutz and usually they would NEVER make it through the semester.

Back then, when the nut job started making the class uneasy like Jared Loughner did, a couple of big guys would sit RIGHT next to him and the frenzy of his his rhetoric would stop IMMEDIATELY.

Now they would call it bullying, back then it was self policing our own class and the professors were always grateful.

Well, we’ll never really know the facts about the kid’s parents or anything of his background because we don’t appear to have anything resembling REAL journalism anymore in this country.

FACTS and TRUTH are a thing of the past ...

Malcoda had no business being in charge of kids in class since he acted in a cruel fashion to a kid who was suffering. He displayed no leadership skills whatsoever, just malicious indifference to one and siding with his students against him. Malacoda added to the kid’s problems and assisted in pushing him further into isolation. He should be embarrassed and ashamed and should never teach again.

My dtrs a teacher. They have no rights. The administration and NEA are the bigbosses. It’s almost impossible to get a disruptive kid removed. Just one kid can keep the other 25 from learning - educational redistribution. She loves her kids, loves teaching, works 3-4 hrs extra each night w/o compensation. I’ve tried to get her to quit but she’ll never leave it. She was born a teacher...

For example, based on some of their statements and questions they have asked children about their parents, the American Psychiatric Association seem to think that people who have guns in their homes may “potentially” be mentally unstable.

“Well its just too bad he didn’t call the Feds....”

Be careful what you wish for. The finger of blame seems to have been pointed at everyone and everything except the shooter. You do not want to invite people to ‘drop a dime’ on you because you exhibit what they deem is “erratic behavior” or because you disagree with them politically.

Do you wish to live under constant surveillance from your neighbors, friends, postman, your barber, etc.? Do you want to be turned in to the feds because someone at work takes offense to your DTOM bumper sticker or someone at Walmart overheard you talking to a friend about 0bama being a communist? I think not.

The kid was a nut, plain and simple and should be hanged by the neck until dead on Pay-per-View.

“He appeared to be to me an emotional cripple or an emotional child,” Coorough said. “He lacked compassion, he lacked understanding and he lacked an ability to connect.”

Once the msm takes a breath and quits blaming Palin, the TEA party and talk radio for a moment or two, they might ask themselves their standard Oprah questions about his parents and homelife. That they haven't makes me wonder if the parents are Demonrat/obama voters.

Ridiculous response. Of course we can judge them. They ARE the parents for God's sake. They raised this puke and they HAVE to take responsibility.

You don't know enough about my wife and I but we have raised 5 daughters. All are college and graduate school graduates. They have NEVER used drugs. They have never been arrested. They were NEVER asked to leave college because of mental instability. They all have responsible jobs in their communities. They were all raised in church, baptized and confirmed. They DON'T have satanic altars in their backyards, or hear voices in their heads, or give any of the multiple, myriad signs of mental insanity that this druggy/drunk cretin gave off. Of Course his parents knew he was unstable! You think they were blind for God's sake? Stop trying to be a goody-two-shoes and start laying the blame where it belongs! The Parents, the sheriff, the teachers, his associates,...all of whom could have STOPPED this tragedy!!!!!!!!!!! Wake up!

It’s ridiculous. Someone might get offended if a student is viewed as having a “problem.”

I wonder how far a teacher and/or administration would have to go to get some real help in this sort of situation. There is obviously too much red tape involved. A big, sarcastic “thank you” to the PC crowd.
