China Spurns Defense Secretary Gates

Defense: Dealing from a position of increasing strength against increasing U.S. weakness, China has rebuffed an overture to hold strategic nuclear talks. Why should they? As we disarm unilaterally, time is on their side.

America doesn't have that big a stick anymore, and the Chinese know it. China and the United States are seemingly moving in different directions both economically and militarily. So when Defense Secretary Robert Gates went to Beijing on Monday speaking softly about the need for strategic talks, the Chinese told him in essence, "Thanks for coming."

The world's oldest civilization is willing to wait patiently for its moment. It is for the most part following former supreme leader Deng Xiaoping's advice to "hide our capacities and bide our time" and "be good at maintaining a low profile."

Gates' visit comes on the heels of an announced $78 billion cut in defense spending over five years, the cancellation of major weapons systems such as the F-22 Raptor and a pledge to shrink the number of active Army and Marine troops. Gates says he's merely slowing the rate of growth, but the reality does not reflect his rhetoric.

we better get over the dispassionate scholarly analyses (”China and the US moving in different directions economically and militarily”) and recognize our weakness will mean poverty, war in Asia, and ultimately the destruction of our homeland in nuclear war.

I think that Obama ought to explain to the Chinese that there is nothing to be gained by refusing to talk to your adversaries.

The Chinese are excellent situational assessors. Obama is a laughingstock in China. Ask Quix.

I'm sure all that impressed the hell out of the peace loving chicoms. A-hole is lucky they even took official notice of his presence.

Haven’t been there during his reign of destructive terror.

From what I know . . . he’s looked at

as worse than a drunken brain dead fool.

They are happy to play fools for all they are worth

and then to condemn them MORE for allowing themselves to be played as fools.

They have NO respect for such miserable bits of human garbage.

And they hate, loathe weakness in leaders.

Any leader.

I’m afraid you are exactly right.

We desparately need high level leaders (POTUS & Congress, SECDEF, Generals/Admirals) that will wake up and realize that talking nice isn’t going to keep China in check. They want to be the new world dominating super power.

Only by keeping our military well trained, staffed, and fully equiped...plus building a stronger U.S. economy free of Chinese investment can we counter them. The price for not doing this will be a war with China before the year 2150.

This about sums it up. This is similar to their unilateral climate change strategy. It didn't help that Obama got all those previous Republican administration officials to call for the disarm treaty.
